Driving from Florence to Siena
 

I will be driving from a rental car location on Borgognissanti along the river in downtown Florence and want to take Via Chiantigiana (SRN 222) through Chianti. What is the best way to get onto SRN 222? I cannot find a map with enough detail for this route.

We actually want to visit a few vineyards on the way to Siena. I was in Italy for 5 weeks last year and did take the bus to Siena, which was really convenient, but this time I would like to take a drive through the Chianti region.

222 is a great route. Just amble along and enjoy the Tuscan countryside. You'll be able to find the road easily.

I would strongly suggest getting a 'neverlost' or similar navigation system in your rental car. We would have not found our way out of Florence without one!

I understand your problem - getting onto the SS222 can be hit or miss. The easiest way is to drive out of Florence past Porta Romana through Galluzzo and Ferrone and join the 222 at Greti. To get to the 222 from its very beginning, you drive along Viale Europa south of the river (Badia a Ripoli), and then to a traffic circle near the entrance to the motorway. Look for signs pointing to Grassina and Greve - go round the circle a couple of times rather than take the wrong exit! Another option is to drive past Piazza Michelangelo to Impruneta and from there to Strada where you join the 222. The good news is that once you're on 222 it's easy going all the way to Siena.
