Driving from Chania to Elafonisi
 

Hi all,

My wife and I will be renting a car during our stay in Crete, and want to know how the drive from Chania to Elafonisi really is. How are the winding roads? I'm from Montreal, so I'm used to crazy drivers, but not so much unpaved, winding, goat-inhabited roads. Any route suggestions? What about on the drive back?

MOST IMPORTANTLY: does anyone have any suggestions for recent accurate road maps that I can get of Cretan regions?

We will be doing similar in May...roads generally are pretty good surface but often narrow and definitely winding as they drop from over 2400 Meters to sea level.
Big busses cover most routes daily so can't be too bad...

The roads in Crete are in good shape, do not think that there will be goats or donkeys after every corner.... in fact it never happened to me.

Now i can't imagine that you will be driving in an altitude of 2.400 meters.... but roads that are winding ( not that many as you are probably expecting), are not a problem either

The driving in Crete is fine. The roads are decent and responsible driving should not present any problems for you. It can be exhilarating when you overlook a steep bank with no guard rails. I have encountered a herd of goats a couple of times - it was a wonderful experience with their tinkling bells.

We drove from Chania to Elafonissi via Falasarna Beach along the coast, but high up overlooking the sea most of the time. We returned through the mountains, both nice drives.Two of my favorite photos of our extended trip to Greece were from those two drives. We bought excellent detailed maps for Western Crete, Eastern Crete and the Peloponessean Peninsula from www.road.gr. They were mailed to us in the US for a reasonable charge.
