Driving from Barcelona to Faro, Portugal

Looking for some advise. We are planning on driving from Barcelona to Faro, Portugal (actually Quarteria which is a bit more south)- visiting family. What are some must dos stops. We were thinking of going through Cordoba or Grenada. Open to ideas. We are traveling with 2 kids (10 &12) but adventurous & love to visit local places/towns. TIA!

Before you decide to do that suggest you check into drop off fees for a rental car.

A couple of questions for clarification: How much time do have? And what time of year are you traveling? Also what kind of travel experiences are you looking for?

We are leaving next week (nothing like last minute). We have sorted out drop off fees. I am thinking 2-3 days to get to Faro. I would rather skip beach areas as we will visit beaches in Algarve. Looking for touristy, yet local places too. We are fluent in Spanish & Portugese & are comfortable driving & with local areas. TIA

Expect the traffic to be heavy and weather to be on the warm side for this rather long drive. Frankly, I would fly.
