driving directions from Rothenburg ob der Tauber to Garmisch
What is the best way to drive from Rothenburg to Garmisch that includes the most scenic part of the Romantic Road? I tried Via Michelin and others, but all gave different itineraries!
Any suggestions/personal preferences would be appreciated. |
It depends on whether you want to tootle down the Romantic Road through places like Dinkelsbuhl or if you just want to get there so you take the autobahn. How quick tdo you want to get there?
|
The quickest way is to get on the A-7 autobahn at the Rothenburg "Einfahrt" (entrance ramp) and head south to the end of the A-7 near Fuessen. From there, head toward Leermoos on the Reutte by-pass road. At Leermoos head east toward Garmisch. This last section is very scenic, running along the base of the Zugspitz massif.
As AisleSeat mentions, between Rothenburg and the Danube, there are several nice towns on highways that sort of parallel the A-7. Dinkelsbuehl is my favorite. In any event, before you get to the Danube, pop back onto the A-7, unless you want to visit Ulm and its cathedral. The stretch between the Danube off the autobahn is not particularly interesting. |
We want to travel on some of the "Romantic Road" to see the most scenic sections of this road.

I'd like to correct an erroneous impression that you may have...
the "Romantic Road" is, by itself, not scenic. It's the TOWNS along this road that are scenic. Therefore you should stop and visit those towns that interest you - say Dinkelsbühl, Nördlingen and Harburg. Landsberg am Lech is a nice town and then head for Oberammergau, where the "scenic" part begins. |
If you get a chance, spend a day in Bamberg. We liked it more than Rothenburg. No tourists and very nice people.

Thanks for your suggestions of scenic towns to visit. We'll plan our route with these in mind.
