Driving directions from London Heathrow to Southampton, England

Thinking about renting a car and driving to Southampton. Cannot find specific directions. Also would I be better to take public transportation and what would that be. <BR>Thanks

Very simple - take the following motorways (freeways):M25 (direction Staines) then the M3 at junction 12). The M3 goes all the way to Southampton. Public transport is a lot messier (look at http://www.railtrack.co.uk for trains or http://www.nationalexpress.co.uk for coaches) - I suggest you drive.

Mary, does cost enter into this at all? I don't know the cost of renting a car but I imagine its a lot more expensive than a return train fare. If all you are using the car for is to get to Southampton and back I'd rather have the hassle of getting the train, Heathrow can be a nightmare traffic wise. I think trains from Southampton depart from Waterloo, but you may be able to pick one up nearer to Heathrow.

If you only need the car to get to Southampton you should get the train instead. Get the rail link coach (regular departures from Heathrow)to Reading and catch a southbound train to Southampton.
