Drivers License - Ireland
 

I'll be renting a car in Ireland in October, I assumed all I would need to bring is my US drivers license - however, someone mentioned that I might also need an international license / permit. Can anyone comment? Thanks

I spent two weeks driving around Ireland, both the Republic and North in 1988 and had only my California drivers license. There was no problem at the car rental agency and I never had any other reason to show it. I would confirm this with your car rental agency. A travel guide to Ireland (Fodors etc.) would also probably indicate if something more is required

Hi, This has been debated on this board before-general concensus was you don't need it so I didn't get one before I went. We did get a parking ticket while in Holland and hotel told us to ignore it. If they go after Braitman and Woudenberg they may try to get it from us but I doubt it. Its a case of us not knowing their rules. If you would feel better with an international license just go to AAA club. If not a member you might want to join and they have affiliates in Europe in case you break down etc. Its about $7

Dear Eileen: RE renting a car in Ireland it's well to know that they DO NOT rent to drivers over 70. I assume you're under that. Indeed, drivers over 70 might not even want to try some of the roads there, especially in the West where the scenery is just not to be ignored--but you look at your peril. Thanks for the feedback - I'll go with my CT license and try to stay on the right side of the road - or rather the left side!!! For the record, I'm well under 70 and am really looking forward to touring Ireland - we're flying into Shannon and then touring the west and south coast before ending up in Dublin
