Driving from Soller to Pollensa, Majorca
 

We will be renting a car while in Majorca. From what I understand there are 2 routes, 1 very scenic but stressful driving, the other not so scenic and not stressful. Just wondering is the scenic route as scary as some describe? We've done the Amalfi Coast drive from Rome to Positano. Also drove in the Douro Valley and the mountains of Basque country. How might it compare to these other routes?

We will be doing this in mid-September. 1st driving from the airport to Soller for 2 nights, then to Pollensa for 2 nights, then back to the airport.

Any recommended day trips from Soller or Pollensa?

Not scary.

It's not a scary drive. There are narrower stretches but nothing that will cause a problem. The road down to Sa Calobra is a bit more narrow but still very drivable. It's a nice drive. Days out from Soller include Valdemossa and Inca (for market day).

From Pollenca: Lluc, Alcudia and maybe Sa Pobla. If you've only got a couple of nights in each place then one trip out from each is enough, giving time to see them properly; Valdemossa and Lluc are the two I'd choose. While you're in Pollenca, sit in the main square, have a drink and people watch. It's lovely and relaxed.

hopefully we will be able to get the automatic car we booked (from past experience it doesn’t always work that way). My husband can drive a stick (I can’t), but rather an automatic for a hilly drive.

We will not be in Soller for Inca market. what is the parking situation in Valdemossa?

Can Lluc be a stop on drive from Soller to Pollensa?

There are plenty of places around Valdemossa to park, so you shouldn't have too much of a problem. Lluc is certainly accessible from either Pollensa or the road from Soller.

The Thursday market in Inca is equally accessible from Pollensa if markets are your thing. Tuesday is Alcudia, Port de Pollensa is Wednesday, Sunday is Valdemossa and Pollensa.

It is also a nice cycle ride so be aware that bikes will be on the route

I like markets, but my preferences given only 2 days in each area is old towns and scenic places (I'm a photgraphy buff). For markets, I'd be most interested in handcrafted items like Jewelry, small accessories or pottery, that I can get as gifts. I also enjoy walking through food markets, but it's not something I'd go out of my way for. Given my schedule I think the Port de Pollensa market makes the most sense. If time allowed, we could possibly do the Inca market from Pollensa. Unlikely we'd do both.

The days trips I'm looking at are Valdemossa from Soller, and Alcudia from Pollensa. I think we'd also stop at Santuari de Lluc enroute to Pollensa.

If you're making Alcudia one of your days, then don't miss the Roman ruins across the road from the town. You have to pay to go in and it won't take more than an hour of your time. You can walk across the road from there and straight into the walled town. The Port d'Alcudia isn't much to engage you, so have a walk round the old town and enjoy lunch somewhere.

We did drive the scenic/longer route and it was not a problem at all. The narrow roads in Soller were much more stressful to deal with. We did stop at Lluc as well. In Alcudia we parked in the lot next to the ruins and did visit them as well. We ended up not going to any markets, as the timing just didn't work, but we loved wandering around the small towns. Glad we had the car.
