Drive time between Frankfurt and Bavaria

Can anyone tell me how long a drive it will be from Frankfurt airport to the castles in Fussen? Also how long a drive from Fussen to Garmisch-Partenkirchen? Thanks for your help.

Maryann,
It's about 270 miles from the Frankfurt airport to Fussen; four and a half hours driving time. It's under forty miles from Fussen to Garmisch-Partenkirchen and you can make the trip in about an hour. The Frankfurt-Fussen route is almost entirely by autobahn. You'll miss the delightful and fascinating cities and towns of the Romantic Road, Rothenburg, Dinkelsbuhl, Nordlingen, Augsburg, Landsberg, Schongau and Rottenbuch, which could well warrant a week's time in themselves. An hour gets you from Fussen to Garmisch but allows no time for visits to Linderhof, Wieskirche, Oberammergau and Ettal.

A bit under 260 miles taking the A5, A8 and A7. Time depends on how fast you'll drive on the autobahns ... anywhere from under 4 hours (plus any stops) to nearly 5 hours.

As Wes notes Garmisch is nearby, but there are many things worth doing in the area of the castles. In fact Garmisch itself is far less attractive to us than what's around Garmisch. At the least Linderhof and the Wieskirch certainly merit visits when in the area.

You'll find useful info about the castles and surroundings at www.twenj.com/bavarianeu.htm

Ed
4 hours for 270 miles. I used to do that in under 3 hours. It depends on the traffic on the autobahn.
