AE owns no cars---their vendors do.
They have contracts with those vendors.
Those vendors are Europcar, Avis, and Hertz--they own cars.
When you pick a location at Venice for pick up you are really picking a vendor--perhaps in that order.
The vendor you pick in Venice must match the vendor at the return location---I think Hertz in this case.

Does that make sense??
BTW, I always call them to book.

I always call AutoEurope. They are very helpful and quite often the rate is better than what is on the website.

Select the 496-E location for pickup.
All 3 vendors are in the same building at Piazzale Roma.

Thank you! Now I get it. Bob, do you think it is cheaper and perhaps less hassle to skip the trains and just drive, Venice to Montepulciano and around the hill towns, and then drive to Rome for drop-off? There are 5 of us.

Yes, with 5.
If you stay the last nite at FCO then consider the Hilton Garden Inn. We will be doing that in May after a week in Montepulciano.

Thanks. We will spend our last three days in Rome. I'll check into the car rental for Venice to Rome by way of three days in Tuscany!!!
