Drive or Train from Rome to Florence

Hi

I am debating whether I should drive or take a train from Rome to Florence. We are 5 adults (incl 2 seniors) and the Eurostar train is costing me 30 euros per person (150 total) into Santa Maria Novella station in Florence. The only other train option into Santa Maria Novella takes nearly 4 hours (eurostar takes about 1hr and 40 mins). There are options into Florence's other stations, but I have heard that it is expensive to get into the town center from these stations. Is this true? I can rent a car from downtown Rome to downtown Florence for 90 euros, but worried about driving/traffic/getting lost in the two cities? Does anybody have a suggestion for one over the other.

Train. 60 Euros is not worth the trouble that you will encounter driving in downtown Rome and downtown Florence.

Mappy.com says fuel alone is another 25 euros and that is if you don't get lost and you will. It is a no brainer, train!!

No debate. Take the train.

Depending on when you go there are Eurostar discounts available even on Trenitalia's website. I think we paid 19 E Rome to Venice in March -- and it was a train that passed through Firenze SMN.

Thanks guys. Is the scenery from Rome to Florence any good? Does it make the extra pain of the drive worth it? Also, are there any other trains besides the Eurostar that might be chaper? Thanks
