Drive From Sarlat to Loire Valley

Hi everyone. First want to thank Stu D., Ira, Moolyn, Jamikins, and all you other wonderful travelers for all the great reports and info. you have been giving. We've had a great time reading all your trip reports and comments.

We are about to submit our "rough draft" itenerary for Sarlat/Dordogne for your expertise advice, but first we thought we would ask if anyone has any comments on something to "view" along the way on our drive from Sarlat to Amboise. On our way from Avignon to Sarlat we are stopping at Carcassonne for a few hours. Is there something we should see along the main Michelin route to Amboise? Or alternate our route a bit to Amboise? it's about a 4 1/2 hour drive.

Thoughts please?

Thank you in advance.

Look up Gargilesse-Dampierre, a pretty town overlooking the River Creuse and not far off the A-20 about halfway between Sarlat and Amboise.

Poitiers has a Romanesque church that is worth a visit, but if driving in the city is too much of a problem, you can stop by St. Savin about 30 km. east of Poitiers.

Some of the photographs might give you an idea:

Oh man, maybe I shouldn't have asked :) Wow, both of these places are EXACTLY what we were looking for. And they are just next to each other. Maybe we can do both? Just leave really early from Sarlat. Those pictures, could it get more perfect?

Thanks both of you. We are going to aim for both. That is just what we were after.

According to Google the towns are 69 km. apart and a 1hr49min. drive (I have difficulties with the time estimate).

Wow, that sounds weird. They are exactly east/west of each other but they sure don't look almost two hours away from each other. Maybe the road you are on is very curvy or congested. Hmmm... Worth looking in to though if we plan ahead for enough time. Sure don't want to pass it up unless we have to.

Thanks again.

Hi E,

What's your route from Carcassone to Sarlat?

According to viamichelin, St Savin and Gargilesse are 70kms apart and driving time is 1hr14min.

Ira, the Michelin Route has us leaving Avignon and heading towards Nimes on the A9/E15 which then goes through Montpellier, Beziers, Narbonne and then taking the A61 to Carcassonne. We weren't going to do Carcassonne until Michelin stated we were going right passed it. Then it has us going from Carcassonne taking the A62 to Toulouse and then the E09 heading to Montebaun/Paris then the D704 to St. Chamarand passing Gourdon.

I am curious on why you are asking? We are planning now to stop at Peche Merle after Carcassonne on the way to Sarlat. Is that why you are asking?

Advice?

Hi EH,

I think I asked before you firmed up your plans for the Dordogne.
