Drive from Munich to Florence
 

Will stay in Munich for a week and rent a car there, if I wish to drive to Florence, which city in Germany should I return the car?

cross the border by train to Italy and pick up another car to continue my journey to Florence?

Or should I simply return car at Florence?

Need smart advise.

Assuming that taking the train is out of the question, the least expensive option would be to return the car to Munich.

If taking the train is an option, do that (the city nightliner leaves at 21:08 and arrives at 6:07 the next day. It's less of a hassle plus you don't have to worry about parking (of course I have no idea what your plans are with regards to driving once you get to Florence).

You really need to give the context of what you hope to accomplish. Are you returning to Munich and flying out of there?

I assume you do not want to pay a 450 eur drop off charge (rent a car in Germany-return in Italy).

I assume you want to tour some of Italy between the Italian border and Florence by car. Then return your car in Munich. Train to Bozen, or Trento or Verona (all can be non train change from Munich ). Rent a car and drive to Florence.

If you go all the way TO Florence by rail it is going to take at least 7 hours during the day and you'll have to change at least once (Bologna).

You keep the car and as said, you'll pay a big drop charge. I'd also recommend taking the train as far as Bolzano (Bozen) or Trento or Verona and rent the car in one of those cities.

Alamo, as just one example, has a counter at the Verona Porto Nuova station and the train ride over the Brenner Pass is a rather pleasant and scenic one, too.

Our plan is...Fly from Toronto to Munich then to Florence, head to Nice and finally back home from Barcelona.

4 adults half journey business half for leisure so we must go that way. Comparing costs train vs car, plus the fun during the journey train vs car, we all want to minimize the cost to drive, as we can only claim the rental of the car but not the toll and gas, on the other hand train tickets can be reimbursed.

We are going to spend 3 weeks on our trip and totally on our own wish during weekend but not weekdays.

Hope it make sense if driving is not a bad idea:))

Anyway we'll seriously drop to drive if this doesn't make sense at all.

IMO, a car would make sense for the area around Florence including Siena although there is both rail and fast bus service from Florence to that city where you do not need a vehicle; Pisa is an hour by train and the "Tower" is easily reached by either taxi or a local bus.

Again, if you DRIVE to Nice you are going to probably incur a drop charge. If you are actually comparing the costs of rail vs car include PARKING charges and then there's that dreaded ticket for being in a non-car zone in Florence or Siena that shows up about six months later thanks to your car rental agency.

With the new information you provided driving from Munich to Barcelona would be a nice trip. Fuel and tolls would be less than 100 euros per person.Parking fees extra.You might want to turn in the car in south west France, perhaps Perpignon. Then take a train to Barcelona.
