Drive form Lake Maggiore (Stresa) to Lake Como (Varenna)

This might sound like a silly quesiton. I've been going on Mappy and Michelin sited for travel routes for our trip to Northern Italy starting in 2 weeks. The suggested route from Stresa to Varenna is to return to the autoroute that goes around Milan and then go north-east towards Como and then onto Varenna. In studying the map, I was wondering if it makes any sense to travel north on the west coast of Maggiore and then head over to Lake Lugano. From there, is it easy to drive to Mennagio, where we could take the car ferry to Varenna (would we need advance tickets for the car ferry?). I gather the highway would take about 2 hours. How long would it take to go the alternative route? We really like exploring little towns and getting off the highway, but if it is a lengthy or difficult drive, maybe we'll save our exploations for a different part of the trip.

Thanks,

Margret

Absolutely. It should take you about two hours to get to Lugano by going clear up to Locarno and around.

Then another 45 minutes to go the 17 miles from Lugano to Menaggio. (Don't need reservations for the ferry to Varenna.)

Of course, my guess is you'll want to take longer -- it is a beautiful drive of less than 100 miles total.

You can do routes by entering segments:
Stresa to Locarno, Locarno to Lugano, etc.

Hmmm ! This sounds familiar--did we not discuss this before? Surely Margret ! Take your time and enjoy it all, including the Val Verzasca just north of Locarno.

Bob, I thought we did, but I couldn't find it going trhough past threads, so I thought I'd ask again. Hmmm- I just realized that I checked by using the search button, rather than looking at my own past threads. Sorry about that. My anxiety is showing! Incidentally, Bob, I have your Italian driving instructions pasted into my word file. You have been a wealth of infomation, and I thank you.
