Drive Baden Baden to Fussen
Is the drive from Baden Baden to Fussen possible to do on a Tuesday in early September? Would leave in the morning and like to arrive before sunset.
If it is possible, is it possible to do it through Lindau, as I would like to see the Alpine Road and Lake Constance. Thank you for your help. |
Hi taz,
www.via,ichelin.com says it is 4:30 to 5:30 hr depending on whether you take the recommended or the sightseeing route. I suggest plotting your route as Baden Baden - Hundseck - Lindau - Fuessen using the "sightseeing" route. This adds only about 8 min to your driving time, but you get to drive the Schwarzwalder Hochstrasse - a very scenic road. Enjoy your visit. ((I)) |
Thank you, can you please send that link again, as the original link is not working.

Should be www.viamichelin.com

Thanks for the correction, Penny.

Thanks for your help! Have you actually driven this road? Is 5:30 a fair length of time to drive this road and would you consider this a "Scary" drive? |
Hi taz,
I've driven that whole route, but not in one journey. It is not scary. My Lady wife has a vertigo problem and had no trouble with any parts of it. I generally figure 4:00 hr between venues if you want to visit spots along the way, but I've done as long as 8 hr, if the purpose is a scenic drive. It will take you about 4 hr to get to Lindau. This will allow you a short break and lunch. (NOTE: Parking is verrry limited in Lindau.) Enjoy your day. ((I)) |
Hi tazdmb; A suggestion would be to do an overnight in Meersburg, a lovely town on Lake Constance. Then you could go to Fussen. Meersburg, a medieval town, is about 2 1/2 hours from Baden Baden. Traveling thru the 'black forest' you could visit Rottweil, another very nice town. ENJOY Iris

An alternative from Baden-Baden is taking the B-462 Schwarzwald Taelerstrasse (Black Forest Valley Road). It passes through some typical Black Forest villages. You then can hook up near Freudenstadt to the unnumbered route along the Wolfach River from Knibis to Wolfach (25 km ), and catch near Wolfach the B-500, Deutsche Uhrenstrasse (German Clock Road)to Triberg, from where you can head to Koenigsfeld, Bad Duerrheim and the Autobahn A-81 to Singen. From there you can either take the northern route along Lake Constance (Bodensee) to Meersburg, Friedrichhafen and Lindau, or the route to Konstanz - Staad and Meersburg.
From Lindau, take the A-96 to exit #3, and from there the B-308 (Deutsche Alpenstrasse - alpine Highway) to Bad Oberstaufen, Immenstadt, Sonthofen and Hindelang. In H. you climb an easy pass route to Oberjoch at the the Austrian border, and on to Nesselwaengle, Weissenbach , Reutte to Fuessen. It takes about 2 1/2 hrs driving from Lindau to Fuessen, some of it very scenic. |
We did the Schwarzwalder Hochstrasse a couple of years ago from Freudenstadt to Baden Baden (we were staying in Gengenbach). We were disappointed and thought the drive unexceptional, especially when compared to some of the other scenery in Germany.
Lindau is a definitely worth visiting, but be warned that there can be a lot of slow moving traffic as you approach Lindau. Would highly recommend an overnight in Meersburg also. It's a very lovely town well worth several days visit but you can see alot in a half a day. |
Hi; If you consider staying in Meersburg, our hotel was the hotelzumschiff.de/ It was on the lake and if this works for you, ask for a room looking out over the lake. In Baden Baden our hotel was hotel-am--markt-baden.de/ Both hotels had their own parking and each was in a great location. ENJOY Iris
