This has been the most interesting post! Just when I think I've researched up the wazoo about all my favorite destinations--France among them--along comes something I didn't know.

Which leads me to a question. I know the Italians prefer their coffee on the tepid side (as opposed to steaming hot as Americans prefer) so do the French also prefer it that way? Wouldn't the bowl make the coffee cool down quicker than would a mug?

Mimi, when you looked on Google, what exactly did you type in? Would "French coffee bowl" lead me to the kinds of bowls you are all talking about?

cafe au lait bowls. the warmth of your hands doesn't let the coffee cool down quickly.
I heat the milk hot and pour it at the same time as the hot coffee. This step is important.

response to dln - go to ebay and type in the type of pottery you are after...for example, we collect "Quimper" from Brittany. There are always bols being offered or you can go to the Quimper web site and order a bol with your name on it. Personally, I like the old ones. Happy Hunting.

Here's a bowl at the Sur la Table site--this one has the "laughing cow" motif.

My own coffee bowls came from Cost Plus, but they don't look especially French. I have the Real Thing on my shopping list for our trip to France next September.

Now that's a good item to pick up in Moustiers! I found one at the flea market in Isle sur Sorgue.

I want you all to know that I spent the better part of the morning scouring the internet for cafe au lait bowls! I am hooked. When we next go to France I'm going to make an effort to find some nice ones, but until then I will take a look at all the stores you mentioned, like Cost Plus and Big Lots. It's a good place to start on a humble collection. Then on to France and the antiques!

And here I thought drinking breakfast tea or coffee out of a bowl was a Sicilian farmer custom or just a quirk of the people at the farm where I stayed. It's interesting that it's also a trendy French style.

Carol, it is not trendy!!! Village people and some like me(For over 30 years I have been drinking my cafe au lait) What's trendy is collecting the old cafe au lait bowls.
Have a happy Easter

I think old Sicilian farmers would find it amusing if they ever knew that foreigners were collecting the bowls they used for breakfast coffee. You could be ahead of the trend if you start collecting Sicilian ones.
