Dressing for December in Rome

My teenage daughter is going to Rome, Florence and Lucca the week before Christmas. Any suggestions on packing for the temperature and weather conditions at that time of year? She will have only one checked bag so we have to be efficient.

Thanks!

I recommend a medium weight waterproof jacket as the primary outdoor wear. Rome shouldn't be all that cold at Christmas, but you could get a cold snap. Typically the temperature will be in the high 40s to low 50s during the warmest part of the day, and nights will usually be above freezing. You'll have some rain, hence the waterproof jacket. Take a compact folding umbrella. Otherwise, normal clothing typical of a midwestern latitude in the U.S. at that time of year should be adequate. Good luck.

hi
for a general idea of past trends, check a weather website that offers historical data--www.wunderground.com is just one
Two years ago friends of mine were in Rome in late Dec and the weather was freezing.
I think you'll just have to check the forecasts just before she goes.
Layering is key anyway--if she packs turtlenecks and tee shirts to wear under sweaters to wear under a warm coat or jacket, she'll be prepared for just about anything. An umbrella, and shoes/boots that can withstand wet weather are also key to comfort imo.

And a good warm scarf will be a help plus gloves. Italians bundle up when it is cold.

Thanks so much. I think we can pack now!

Jayne, think layers and waterproof, bring a hat, gloves and scarf for each of you, and I think you'll be all set.

Thanks again to each of you. She leaves in three days. Any last minutes tips that might come in handy?

I agree with the some of the other suggestions. I would bring a hat gloves and a lightweight rain top and then dress in layers. Fleece with a long sleeve cotton top should be more than enough. I usually had the rain gear, gloves etc. in my backpack. We actually had a day in Ostia Antica that was at least 65 deg f and sunny.
