Dress in Tuscan Region
 

I went through the posted dialog on shorts and think I am clear on that topic. In the evening what is most appropriate for dinners out and walks in the beautiful Tuscan towns? I plan to pack "smart casual" outfits that can be mixed and matched ( I hope matte jersey is still in vogue in Europe!) Long skirts, trousers, hooded tops...is it more appropriate for women to wear skirts and dresses rather than slacks? I am traveling with a group. Any advice...

I spent a week in Tuscany in May of this year--Castellina in Chianti and Pienza were the two cities where we had dinner in restaurants. You'll be comfortable in skirts or nice slacks; I think more of the ladies lean towards wearing skirts. No need for a dress and a skirt allows you to mix and match!

I would wear something that makes you feel good. Just about anything is acceptable within good taste. What time of the year are you going?

I am going in September...which poses it's own set of problems...hot weather/cool weather packing.

My husband is from Tuscany, and last year we were there in early October. The year before, we were there in early September. In September it was still quite hot, late 80's early 90's. I would bring several sundresses, so that you can throw a jacket on at night. I might wear khaki or that type of pant during the day. Prepare for rain. My husband and I had never, and on our last trip we had quite a bit of rain. I would attempt to dress in layers, wearing as little or as much is necessary. September is an incredible time in Tuscany. For Dinner I have always found that it is nice to dress up a bit, but I wouldn't go crazy, you will look out of place. I would think simple, and sophisticated. Since my husband and I take alot of photos and use the video camera, I try and look decent, because those are life-long memories.

I was in Tuscany for 5 days early last September and found it suprisingly chilly and very windy. Layers seemed to be the best way to go when transitioning from sunny country side to shady villages. Older Italian women in the towns were wearing skirts and sweaters while the younger Italians were in jeans and pants (very tight seemed to be the fashion)and of course fabulous shoes. Have fun. It is an enchanting place!
