Dress in America

i am going to visit American from Norway. What is american dress like? I just want to make sure I do not stand out. Do you were only jeans, or trousers as well? Pleae explain.

thank you.

Julie Mar 20th, 2001 08:05 AM

Don't worry about it. Wear your regular clothes. Don't try to fit in. As they say to us, once we open our months, our accent gives us away even when we know the language.

Check a weather website to determine temperatures in area you will be visiting. Bring nice pants, shirt and tie for dinner at a nice restaurant.

American dress is fairly casual, jeans shorts, and sneakers are very common, even in downtown areas. However, here in America almost anything will fit in. The dress is very similar to northern Europe.

It depends on how old you are and where you are going. If you are over 40, you should only wear jeans if you are visiting Disneyland or someplace rustic or on the seashore. If you are visiting a large city like New York, trousers are fine but not jeans.

Caitlin Mar 20th, 2001 10:29 AM

I live in New York City. Jeans are fin in New York. I wear jeans, as do most people I know, in casual situations and walking around town, shopping, going to museums, etc. Naturally, people dress more for going out to dinner, except at the most casual, neighborhood places (including bars and pubs). There, jeans are also fine.

Jen Mar 20th, 2001 11:10 AM

One of the great things about America is that you'll fit in no matter what you wear.

And people DO wear jeans in New York.

SharonM Mar 20th, 2001 11:18 AM

OMG!!!

I only have one year left to wear jeans???

pat b Mar 20th, 2001 11:25 AM

When and where are you coming to visit?

Judy Mar 20th, 2001 11:31 AM

Hi Vora, check out web sites all over the place: CNN, fashion, trends, etc.
And in my age group(baby boomers), we are starting to get "stretch" jeans, if you know what I mean! <g> Judy ;-)

Vora Mar 20th, 2001 12:15 PM

Thank you for all your reply. I will be coming to USA in mid-April for about 3 weeks.
I will be visiting New York city, Washington DC and then to San Diego, CA. I am 21 and hope I fit in in America. I do not want to be out of place. Thank you.

Lila Mar 20th, 2001 12:32 PM

Anything goes here. Seriously, especially in New York, if you wore an over-sized garbage bag, you'd hardly get a second glance.

Pleeze Mar 20th, 2001 12:41 PM

Carol
Give me a break!
Rex Mar 20th, 2001 12:47 PM

If you have traveled much, dress as you would for London, Paris or Berlin to go to New York.

Dress as you would for Malta or Majorca for San Diego.

Washington depends on the season.

Best wishes...

and welcome to the United States...

Rex
Patti Suttle Mar 20th, 2001 12:54 PM

Yes, in America you can wear almost anything and fit in-thank God! You don't have to wear all black, you can wear sneakers, trainers or whatever you want to call them. And, get this: you can even wear pink jogging suits and look OK (esp. if you bathe regularly you will at least be clean). From what I am reading its much less detrimental here on what you wear compared to Paris!(please don't slam me on the jogging suit-my mother-in-law wears them all the time and she looks adorable in them and she is neat and clean and comfortable). Whew!
Patti

Pam Mar 20th, 2001 01:18 PM

Vora: You can wear anything that you will feel comfortable in, so don't worry. IF you must blend in, you'll need pants about four sizes too big, hanging below your hips, $200.00 sneakers, a large flannel shirt (buttoned at the collar), large gold chains and piercings throughout your head. On second thought, we've got enough of that now.

wendy Mar 20th, 2001 01:38 PM

We wear whatever we feel like in the US, so you should too.

whatever Mar 20th, 2001 02:07 PM

Is Rex for real? "Dress as you would for Malta or Majorca"?

The pompous ass returns...

Rex Mar 20th, 2001 02:17 PM

I have a number of friends in Europe who tell me that "going to Malta" would be a common "going to a sunny beach" destination for Europeans. I think that it would not be much different from saying "going to Miami or Myrtle Beach" to an American.

There will be no end to calling me a Pompous Ass - - even when not deserved - - will there?
Barbara Mar 20th, 2001 03:04 PM

Rex,

I thought your reply to Vora's question was very nice and not at all pompous. Having said that, I would like to point out that San Diego is not just a beach town. It is, in fact, the second largest city in California after Los Angeles and the sixth largest in the United States. We have thriving telecommunications companies and many biotechnology companies amongst others. We also have one of the largest US Navy bases. San Diego just doesn't seem to be big because it's so spread out and is a "collection of neighborhoods" rather than a "city" like New York or San Francisco.
Vora, in San Diego people do dress quite casually almost all the time. Have a wonderful visit to the US.

I have seen MANY women over forty looking stunning in jeans. Carol, is not in the clothes, dear....
