Dresden Sunday suggestions requested
We will be visiting Dresden at the end of Nov, and am looking for something unique to do on a Sunday. .It will be a little early for the opening of the Christmas markets, and we have been there previously, so have been to the Green Vault, Zwimmer, and most of the other major sites. Any suggestions?

Zwimmer? I guess "Zwinger" :-)
In case you're interested in more recent history, my suggestions are as follows: The Military History Museum: http://www.mhmbw.de/ A must see for both architecture and exhibits. Caution: Could be you spend the whole day inside. Also, the former Stasi headquarter in Dresden might be of interest for you: http://www.bautzner-strasse-dresden.de/ An authentic site. Prison, offices, even the original Soviet NKWD jail in the basement, used after WWII, is preserved. FYI: across the street, in the house Angelikastraße 4, worked Wladimir Putin for the KGB during his years in Dresden ... Another suggestion: Memorial Münchner Platz. (free) https://www.stsg.de/cms/dresden/startseite Opened in 1907 as Royal courthouse, it was used by the Nazis, Soviets and East German communists as courthouse, prison and execution place (last in 1956). Otherwise, see the Saxon Folk Art Museum, their Christmas exhibit should already be open by then: https://volkskunst.skd.museum/en/ausstellungen/ Have you been to the State and University Library? They have a book museum with one of the three preserved Maya codices and many more old books/autographs worth seeing, by Bach, Luther, Wagner ... btw, their current exhibit shows unique original pieces by Martin Luther. (free) www.slub-dresden.de Your visit is probably on "Totensonntag" or also named "Ewigkeitssonntag", a day when locals go to the cemeteries and visit the graves of their ancestors, dead family members and friends. Usually there are lots of church services and concerts that day. You might attend one if you're interested. The Frauenkirche e.g. has an organ concert with works of Händel and Telemann at 3 pm. The Kreuzkirche has Händel's "Messiah" at 5 pm, highly recommended. https://www.kreuzkirche-dresden.de/v...und-orchester/ |
