sorry about that -only trying to add my two cents in a helpful way - I still think a day in Dresden itself is enough -more is always better-but a day trip to Meissen or Saxon Switzerland is a good option for the other.

Good News, Annhig!

For our upcoming trip next <B>August</B> we have decided to ditch five of our six nights in London and spend the time in Cornwall instead.

Had to fiddle around with existing flight (expensive to change/abandon) arrangements back to London from Scotland, do the rental car thing, etc., but we will fly into Newquay and stay in Falmouth ( a location you had suggested as I recall).

No worries about the hotel recommendation "issue" above as I agree about the age and comfort aspects of things.

I will now sign off of this thread and to those above who offered useful recommendations without the necessity of having to have the very last word I am appreciative.

I already read your recs on my other thread and appreciate those. I ended up booking at the Royal Duchy because I got a "deal" with Booking.com

However that hotel does have an interesting cancellation policy but anyway, will go with it and see how it works out. I know the place is "old" and has been "renovated" and I've read all the reviews and figure we don't really HAVE to have A/C etc., etc.

I'm looking forward to all of it in the area regardless of weather. Be a nice change from our usual London "thing" I think.

Good choice, Dukey. Though we've not slept there we've had lunch on the terrace a few times and it's very nice. Great views too. Hope the August weather cooperates.

DH just finished his four-week course at the Goethe Institut and is wandering around the Christmas markets. Happy to report: that amazing donut stand is back!

I'm joining him for five days and plan to revisit my favorite museums and take in the markets. We have reservations at m(eatery) and Kastenmeiers (got the last table available for the night we wanted) and will have our last dinner at Tamakuchi in the QF shopping area -- we both love their Singapore noodles.

Went to the Striezelmarkt opening on Thursday, oecumenic service in Kreuzkirche first, then opening procedure at the market. Wonderful, very christmassy! :-)

I found the medieval market in Stallhof to be better than last year. Prices not raised as far as I could see. Heading out to the Lausitz region for smaller markets today. Have already been at the opening ceremony in Freiberg on Tuesday. So many Christmas markets, so little time ...

I am delighted you guys are enjoying this thread. Perhaps we can keep it going until I actually GET to Dresden next year and then you can tell me, "Oh, you should have done this or should have done that," LOL.

Anyway, as to these Christmas Markets I have to agree they can be fun and charming and to see the variations between places as we did which included Vienna, Salzburg, Munich, and Berlin, made it all the more interesting.

I hope ALL of you have a wonderful holiday season this year. Over <B>here</B> I'm not sure what the New Year is going to bring if you get my meaning.

I went to the ZDF Advent concerts in earlier years, the best was probably with Jonas Kaufmann, Elina Garanca and Anja Harteros. A friend snuck me in to the dress rehearsal a couple of years ago when Vittorio Grigolo sang - what a show! LOL

Too much Baroque music nowadays for my taste. But always great ambience.

Having a wonderful time in Dresden as always! Great dinner tonight at Kastenmeiers (Cosmos only 6.50 euros, a bargain compared to CH). We were lucky enough to have snow !!) last night. Rain today, but who cares.
