Dresden hotel question

Ingo or other Fodorites,

I am looking at 2 hotels in Dresden and trying to decide which one is "better".

1) Ibis (Lilienstein/Konigstein/Bastei) on Prager Strasse - I assume all 3 Ibis are at the same location, right? I am finding a PREpaid rate of €59.

2) L Hotel Altstadt on Magdeburger Straße. PREpaid rate is €55,20.

Any pros/cons for these 2? The Ibis is a lot closer to the train station (we will be taking the train to/from Berlin); but the L Hotel is newer and closer to Sempreoper?

Thanks in advance.

Definitely the Ibis. The L Hotel is located right next to the major railroad between Dresden Hauptbahnhof and Dresden-Neustadt meaning that each and every train going through Dresden passes by in a distance of 10 m. NOISY. And the neighbourhood is quite dull.

The Ibis Hotels are surprisingly good. Quite basic, plain decor but everything you need. Right in the pedestrian zone from Hauptbahnhof to the old town.

Thanks again for your help, Ingo. Ibis it is then!

Topping to ask the same question.

I'll be in town for business the whole week, staying at a hotel in the suburbs (many of the mtgs are at the hotel), but want to book a hotel IN town for the weekend when I'm on my own.

The Ibis Dresden Königstein is available the nights I need it. Are there any other hotels in the same class I should consider as alternatives due to location or condition of the hotel?

Hi J62, we were satisfied with our stay at the Dresden Ibis. It was, as expected, fairly basic; but it was clean, convenient, and fit our budget.

Just in case you don't want it as basic and charm-less like the Ibis hotels are ...

An (English) friend from Barcelona stayed in the Hotel Martha Hospiz a few weeks ago. She liked it VERY much - a very nice place with charm. It's a bit more expensive, though.

Turns out the Ibis was just fine for my need. Basic, yes, but the room was clean and bed comfortable (typical German hotel mattress & feather blanket). Price was good - prepaid beforehand on hotels.com in $US for $100/night for a busy June weekend. Going rate at other hotels was over $200 for the same days.

- Breakfast buffet was 10 euro. Quite crowded, but ok for 1 person.
- Internet access was 19c/min or 12.50 euro / day.
- Parking in the nearby lot was 6.00 euro/day.

Location was a little far from the main sights in the Altstadt for me - it would not be an ideal location if you wanted to come and go during the day. Hotel is located in a pedestrian zone that connects directly to the main railway station and extends all the way to the Altstadt.

Saturday the weather was beautiful. Apparently the 1st nice day in a long while. I spent a wonderful day hiking in the Saxony Switzerland region with some friends, then had dinner back in town at one of the many outdoor restaurants.

Topped off the evening watching an opera projected on the square outside the Semper opera house.

I'm glad it worked out, J62!

J62 - glad to hear it was fine for you! Yup, first 'summer' days in *weeks*. LOL

You're not really saying you were also at the Theaterplatz, watching the FAUST premiere? Did you see me? ;-)

Yes, of course I saw you ingo. You looked stunning on the 20m projection screen, and your voice was wonderful, as usual!
