Downham Market - Norfolk England
My son's girlfriend will be living here for a year and there is not much info available online about the town. Is anyone familiar with the town? Any suggestions on points of interest around the area or things to do that might interest a 20 something girl who likes music and art? Thanks in advance!

I've only been there once years ago --but I do know the general area and there is TONS to see/do. Hopefully some of our East Anglia experts will see your thread.
But just a short list of things near or not too far away. Kings Lynn, Peterborough and Cambridge are all w/i 30miles or less.. Then there is Stamford w/ its outdoor Shakespeare theatre.
Peterborough has a couple of festivals and Cambridge --well it is Cambridge so a fantastic place for young adults to visit. Cambridge is about 30 miles from Downham Mkt.
Others will have more info I'm sure.

Thanks janisj! She has not traveled much and is doing volunteer work there as well as in Kings Lynn. I am hoping she finds some friends and has a chance to explore. I looked for images online and I did see some really picturesque looking scenes.

Lived in Wisbech many moons ago, which is in the general area.
Hunstanton was a popular day out for the locals when they needed a spot of fresh air; can't recall being very impressed by the beach when I got there though.
Passed by the gates of Sandringham Castle en route, not sure if the gardens are open to the general public when the royals are not in residence.
Peterborough had little of interest but going a bit further afield, Stamford had a nice Olde England feel, with the added attraction of nearby Burghley House.
Cambridge is the obvious main local attraction, particularly for a younger person.
Apologies but my only actual memory of Downham Market itself was sampling a pint of Ruddles ale there......

Norwich is about an hour away by car.
If she likes music Snape is about two hours away.
The Aldeburgh festival programme has not been fully announced, but you can see the website at http://www.aldeburgh.co.uk/events/64...ival-june-2011
For an art lover, Flatford is about 1 hour 1/2 away.
It hasn't changed a lot since Constable painted it.
This is my photo of Willy Lott's house. http://sylvia.photoblog.me.uk/p45302841.html
You can see that it is almost exactly like the painting,
The only thing lacking here

Hi! This was an older post and she has been back from her adventure for some time. She adored the beauty of the area. She did spend time in Kings Lynn while she was there. She was working with developmentally disabled adults and I believe she took the train there a couple of days a week.
