Dover or Canterbury - Which one for a day trip from London
 

Which would be a better choice for a day trip from London?

Carolyn: Both places have a lot to see and both are worth a day trip. Which is &quot;better&quot; mostly depends on what interests you. Canterbury has the magnificent cathedral and medieval bldgs. Dover has the Castle (huge - takes much of a day to see) including roman lighthouse and WWII bunkers, views from the ramparts across the Channel etc.<BR><BR>There is no better here - just which ever one you want to see.

It is possible to see both on the same day. :) My husband and I did this about 5 years ago.<BR>I am sure someone on this forum will be able to give you more explicit and updated information on trains or driving directions if you plan to have a car.

Carolyn,<BR><BR>I did both on a day trip and wish I hadn't. Canterbury's cathedral is spectacular, but the Brits did a poor job rebuilding this town after the war. If you only have one day, my suggestion is Dover to see the castle, the cliff, and I had some very good fish and chips in Dover.

My wife and I were in Canterbury when the 9/11 thing happened. We were just coming back from Dover and Leeds castle on a Evan Evans tour. Wish we would have spent more time at Dover to see the castle on the cliff.....

You didn't say when your trip would be.<BR>If it is in summer( when the daylight hours are plentiful) and you really want to see both Canterbury Cathedral and Dover Castle on the same trip, I believe it would be do-able by train.<BR>You would need to leave London by 8 AM. (Leaving earlier would be better of course).<BR>The trip from London to Dover Priory Station takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes..<BR>The trip from Dover to Canterbury takes less than 30 minutes and from Canterbury to London is about 1 hour 30 minutes.<BR>It would be a full day, but if you only have limited time in England this is a way to see both the places you want to see.

Definitely Canterbury. This is no contest. Canterbury is a beautiful old medieval city and the seat of the Church of England. Dover is, well, a place you go to take boats to the rest of Europe.
