Douro Valley, Portugal-- need help with hotel
So many gorgeous places to stay in the Douro Valley! Having a hard time narrowing it down. Have you stayed at THE special place? Please help!
Here's what I'm looking for: king bed, full breakfast, balcony attached to,the room, views of the river, GOOD restaurant on site, parking on site and well located for touring. I was looking around the Pinhao area, but can be flexible. Staying for 3 nights. I would like to keep it under 220 E a night. I am very interested in the Quinta do Pego but I've been offered only twin beds. So many only offer beds queen or smaller. Thanks! Kathy |
You won't find a king bed (US size) in Portugal. King beds in Europe are 72 x 80". Usually twin beds can be put together to create a (European size) king bed.

You could try finding something around Vila Nova de Foz Côa which has some important archeological sites as well as vineyards.

Thanks! I do know the difference between US and Euro beds, but I've run into a lot of descriptions that state queen or even smaller. And we may go,with the two twins pushed together as that seems a good compromise.
I'm set on the area between Regua and Pinhao because my husband is a keen wine enthusiast and we will enjoy the activities in this area. We may well go with Quinta do Pego. Has anyone stayed at Quinta Nova or Quintana do la Rosa or Quinta do Vallado? |
I have stayed at Quinta de la Rosa. They have some great rooms. One is a little attic room that is super sweet with a balcony but I don't remember what kind of bed it has. Many of the rooms just have views, no balcony. So not sure it would work for you. There is a communal terrace that has a view and many nooks and crannies to relax in. I don't eat breakfast so I do not know if it is "full" or just cereal and yogurt etc, but you could ask them.
I have been to Quinta Nova but not stayed there - it is very beautiful, but you are stuck up there if you don't want to drink and drive (and its a curvy drive.) At least at Quinta de la Rosa you can walk into Pinhao. |
Loved our stay at the Vintage House in Pinhoa.

We stayed at Quinta do Pego and absolutely loved it. The grounds and views are spectacular. Very nice rooms and common area, grounds and infinity pool overlooking the river.

Many thanks! After much agonizing, I've booked the Casa do Visconti de Chanceleiros for our 3 nights. It was so hard to choose, but we will, have a king bed which is important to my 6'4" husband. What a wonderful delimma-- to have so many beautiful accommodations to chose from. Kathy
