Dordogne Valley
 

Is there a site or other source for bus and rail schedules in the Dordogne Valley.

In the Fall of 2005 hope to train from Paris to Toulouse and then on to Cahors. From there we want to be able (is it possible without a car?) to use public transportation to make several side trips.

Any suggestions or experiences???

I had this site bookmarked, but I've never used it, so I don't know whether it's good: http://www.valleedudropt.com/train.htm Like many of the nicest rustic areas, I don't think the Dordogne is an especially easy place to get around totally by public transportation.

There is no real bus network in the Dordogne. For example, there is a WEEKLY bus from Le Bugue to Périgueux. Most of the buses are large vans that sersve to take locals from one place to another, and not the types of places tourists want to visit.

There is train service from Cahors to a number of places in the Dordogne. I'm sure you could get to Sarlat and Périgeux, and then to smaller towns like Les Eyzies, Le Bugue, Le Buisson, etc., but it's not particularly easy.

The things most people go to the Dordogne to enjoy - prehistoric sites, the two rivers, beautiful villages, romanesque architecture - can't easily be accessed by public transport.

Are you planning to base yourself in Cahors, then? If that's the case, I think you'd be very limited in terms of possible side trips into the Dordogne and even if you could arrange some, would probably spend as much time on public transportation as you would enjoying the destinations.
