Besides, It's hardly an inspiring drive. I'd rather be on a train watching the countryside unfold. And 5.5 hours is fast - I've driven it and hit detours and such and barely made it in 7 hours.

Libourne is definitely a TVG stop.

Having wended my way between Paris and the Dordogne dozens and dozens of times, I have narrowed my favorite ways down to 2: (1) TGV to Bordeaux/Libourne, then Corail train to Périgueux and pick up car there, or (2) regular train from Gare d'Austerlitz through Limoges to Périgueux. Either way I do it, it's 6 hours from Paris to my front door.

I'm not an expert about this area of the world, but when we were faced with how to get from Paris to Dordogne this summer 2007, it seemed like it would take pretty much the whole day no matter whether we did the TGV , regular trains, or drove. Being very stingy with the limited amount of time we had to spend, we chose to extend our flying time by one hour and fly directly to Bordeaux--maybe this is an option for others too if you're not planning to spend any time in Paris. Everyone seems so in love with this region, I can't wait to get there!

If you add the time it takes to go to the airport and the lead time you need at the airport, the 5 hour train ride is not that much more, and may be cheaper if you order the tickets far in advance. I find taking the train more pleasant then going through the (stupid) security checks.

Your plan is the right one if you are transiting Paris on the way to the Dordogne.

However, the OP will be in Paris before going off to the South.

We are also planning a trip to France in April as well - Dordogne and Languedoc regions. Didn't research the TVG b/c we are renting a car and driving but I recommend getting Rick Steves' book on France. It is very informative. There is a great chapter on Dordogne and the surrounding areas - also includes a section on Paris. Have fun!
