Dordogne/Perigord B&Bs
 

Hello All.

I am new to this forum and am enjoying the wealth of information posted.

Although we have been to France many times, last June was our first foray away from Paris. We rented a car and drove to the Loire. We stayed at three different B&Bs (one I highly recommend is the Chateau de Nazelle in Amboise) while visting 11 of the chateaus. It was wonderful and left us wanting more!

This year we plan on visiting the Dordogne/Perigord area for a total of 11 days. Could you please recommend a few B&Bs that we should consider. If this topic has already been covered, a link would be great.

We have a 7-year-old daughter so a pool on the property would be a plus. She is also into horseback riding and information on trail rides would also be appreciated.

There are horseback riding stables in both Allas-les-Mines and Audrix where you can go trail riding. And if you do a google search for fermes equestres Perigord you'll unearth loads.

Thirdly, I'd suggest looking into the possibility of renting a place for a week or more. There are tons of self-catering rental properties in the area.

I cannot recommend a specific place just yet, but we will be staying in a house about 6 miles from Domme this June. The price is right, and the home looks great! So far, our experience with the rental agency, Simply perigord, has been favorable. They seem to be fairly professional and on top of things.

But if you're pretty certain you want a B&B, then disregard what I said (but not the first two points!).

Didn't even notice the Go Bears! thing - as in Cal-Berkeley? If so, let me chime in, too!

See, and I assumed Chicago Bears. Perhaps it's neither.

Now I'm genuinely curious. Which is it, GB81?

StCirq - I have read several of your posts and I must say that you provide a wealth of information. I had come accross Le Moulin Neuf (http://www.the-moulin-neuf.com/) in my web surfing. It looks like a wonderful place to stay, but as stated on their site: "Because of the abundace of unfenced water, we do not consider Moulin Neuf to be suitable for children under the age of 10".

Any opinions on the Chateau de Siorac (http://chateaudesiorac.com/home.html); the Château de Saint Sulpice (http://www.vacationfrance.com/vf/vf1752_en.html) or La Vigerie in Carlux (http://www.best-of-perigord.tm.fr/he...otes_uk.html)?

I can comment on La Vigerie, which is in Carlux, where I live. It is a stunning house, right on the Dordogne, with a pool. The property regularly appears in design magazines and features on the best Chambres d'hotes (B&B's)The couple who own it are charming, very helpful, and speak some English. However, in July and August the whole house is being rented by the week. You dont mention your dates, but if that's the period you want, it wont be avaiable.

I tried doing a search for Les Charmes de Cazulet and came up empty. Do you have a link for them?

You might also google L'Auberge du Noyer outside Le Bugue (which is closer to the main sights than some of these you're looking at). Haven't checked it out for a few years so not sure what the status is, but it was a darling place.

gracejoan: Please report on Les granges hautes; we tried to stay there in October but they were booked. The website makes the place look very special.

I found the Les Granges Hautes on this site...someone said that they always stay there when in the area.

I have rented a place in Carlux for the fall of 2007 and they have said that the nearby area is quite special.

French friends who live NE of Paris will be joining me for a few days while there.

I will report back about it.

We loved the Domaine du Chateau de Monrecour when we stayed there last Fall. Wonderful rooms, great breakfast, pool, etc. You can stay in the Chateau or rent self-catering rooms on the grounds. Their website is www.monrecour.com It's just outside of Beynac and beautifully situated for day trips all over the Dordogne. Need to reserve well in advance as they fill up quickly.

Back in 2003, I stayed at a lovely inn, located in St. Foy le Grande, about 10 miles west of Beregerac. It is called L'Escapade. It is run by an Anglo-French couple: she is the hostess and he is the chef. It is on the site of a former tobacco farm and the buildings date from the 17th century.
