Dordogne or Pryenees?

Old thread's sort of long, so, will post new one. We will arrive in Paris on May 19 and will probably spend a week or 8 days there. Then fast? train to Toulouse. From there, it's either the Dordogne or the Pyrenees, but not both. We fly out of Paris on June 8. Trying to decide which of these areas to spend time in. Thoughts anyone?

They are so different that I can't imagine offering any comments without knowing anything about what interests you or why these two particular areas are on your list of options. AND we would need to know how much time you would spend in whichever location you choose.

If you like hiking in the mountains, the Pyreneesl. If you like old villages, towns and castles, the Dordogne.

Are you renting a car?

There is so much to see in the Dordogne, I think you will enjoy it very much. Make time for the Gouffre de Padirac.

There is so much to see in the Pyrenées, too. It's a complete case of apples and oranges. I can't imagine anyone but you could make this decision. What have you been using for research tools?

The Gouffre de Padirac, while an interesting phenomenon, is hardly a highlight of a visit to the region, and it's not in the Dordogne. It's in the Lot.

Oh stcirq, bless your heart.

If you are renting a car (but only if), I think one of the major secret highlights of the Pyrénées are the Gorges of Kakuetta.

Dordogne or Pyrenees?

Because our hiking abilities are limited, I think we may wish to split 10 - 12 days in the Sarlat area and perhaps St Cirq Lapopie area. Any recommendations re where to stay in the latter? Also, how difficult would be a drive from St. Cirq to thw Tarn Gorge?

StCirq Oct 18th, 2018 11:13 AM

I answered you in detail on your St-Emilion thread.

How dare anyone argue with the self-anointed Queen of the Dordogne.

The Dordogne has many more charms than the Pyrenees.

As noted they are very different and hard to compare feature by feature.

I spent a very pleasant night at the Auberge du Sombral in Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, which still gets very positive reviews.
