Dordogne Must See
 

Traveling to France in March/April and will be concentrating on the Dordogne area. Please advise as to the "must see" and also recommended restaurants. Thanks.

We spent a week in the Dordogne last year and loved it. We based ourselves in Sarlat and found it a beautiful town and great launching place. I wrote a trip report about our experiences, so just click on my name if you want to read it.

I gathered lots of information on this site from many experienced visitors to the Dordogne. The medieval villages are lovely and the lush countryside and rivers beautiful.

Where will you be based?

Many thanks for all the suggestions! We will be traveling to different sites and not really based in one location...at this moment anyway.

Lascaux II, Rouffignac, Hautefort, Sarlat, Périgueux especially for the Wednesday market, Beynac, Domme, La Roque-Gageac, Monpazier, Brantôme, Bourdeilles.

If your interests are concentrated in the Périgord Noir, which is the case for most travelers to the area, it doesn't make sense to travel around to different sites. The vast majority of things that people visit are in a very small area. So I think you should be looking at one base location - that is, assuming you'll have a week or two as opposed to a month or more.

Sarlat is a wonderful medieval town with easy driving access to as many caves and castles as you could want. Look at B&B "La Lantern"
