Thank you sooo much for the advice. Very helpful and much appreciated. I have decided to rent for the first year or two before I purchase a home. I've done a LOT of research in finding an area that suits me, and have narrowed it down to a villa such as ST Cirq la Popie, or Figeac, (both relatively close to Sarlat, yet somewhat less populated.)
Thanks also to "Carlux" for the advice.

Regarding St Cirq la Popie, don't be fooled into thinking this is 'less populated' in the summer. Thousands - literally - of tourists descend on this village in the summer. I think this would be one of the worst places to retire to, as it suffers from the 'tourist site' syndrome. Too many people in the summer, not enough for any real life in the winter. Although it's not too far from Cahors I suppose.

Figeac would be more interesting, although a bit chilly in the winter.

Carlux - I wasn't aware of the amount of tourist in St Cirq., and definitely will keep that in mind. You're right, doesn't sound like a retirement community to me. I will check out Figeac though. What do you know of small villas south of Toulouse? I've talked to some ex pats 30 to 45 mintues south of Toulouse, and they rave about the area being quite and laid back, yet close enough to cultural events in Toulouse.

We would like to take a hot air balloon ride in the Dordogne in mid June. We are staying in the Beynac and Sarlat. Is there any recommendation for morning or evening flights? I have contacted Lionel from Montgolfiere % Chateaux he has been quick to reply. We will be there mid June. Mist in the morning, cloud cover?? or do we try for afternoon sun on the vilage, issues with looking into the sun for photos?? Any comments based on a balloon experience?? I know it will depend on the wind, weather etc. Thanks.
