Dordogne - Biron or Cubjac as a base?

I am currently trying to find lodging for my 4 nights in Dordogne (in early October) and am trying to narrow it down between two nice self-catering places that I have found. One is in Biron and the other in Cubjac. I have no set itinerary for the days yet as it will depend on where we end up setting up base camp.

Any thoughts on which might be a better location?

The places I am considering are:

in Cubjac

in Biron

Thanks in advance for any advice!!

Neither is ideal if you are planning to visit the usual Périgord Noir sites. Pretty places, but too far off track for a typical visit to the area. You'll spend way too much time in transit to and from the caves, the beautiful Dordogne villages Sarlat, the markets, etc.

Sarlat sounded a bit too crowded for me - some others on the boards mentioned that it could be a difficult place to get in and out of every day. But perhaps these two spots (Cubjac and Biron) are TOO far off the beaten path?

Yes, they are!

Le Prieure at Biron is stunning, and the quality is exceptional. It's about an hour's drive to Sarlat and the other river villages like La Roque Gageac, Beynac and Castelnaud or Limeuil are even closer. Everything is a drive in the Dordogne, so if you like fine accommodation, then I would go for that! You can still enjoy great day trips in all directions. Nearby Monpazier also has a number of good restaurant options for dinner.

We stayed just outside of Sarlat here: http://www.les-granges-hautes.fr/ and had a wonderful time. We didnt get stuck in any traffic and it was close enough to pop into Sarlat easily. Highly recommend it.

Definitely not Cubjac - I had to check the map to find out where it is, and I've lived here for almost 20 years. Biron too is off the beaten track if you are only here for 4 days.

A second vote for Les granges hautes, run by a charming couple, and well situated.: http://www.les-granges-hautes.fr/

definitely a sign that somewhere is too far off the path when a local hasn't heard of it! thanks for the les granges suggestion - i will take a look!

and thanks, rosemaryoz. i don't mind staying slightly further out to get a beautiful spot to stay. we love coming back every evening and sitting outside with a glass of wine and a light dinner - so it's important to me to find a peaceful place with lovely views, etc...
