Dordogne Base
Dunno what happened, but I posted this yesterday and it has now disappeared into the ether. Oh for the days when we posted our messages oin stone with a chisel.
My question: I'm looking for a Dordogne base. I was planning on Sarlat, but is it too spoiled by modernity and tourism? A poster raved about a B&B at St Crepin-et-Carlucet, but is it too remote from facilities? Someone said Domme is nice but hard to drive in and out of. What about Les Eyzies? Or St Leon-Vezeres? Or Montignac? Or is Sarlat best after all? I'd be wanting to explore in all directions from it: Lascaux, St Amand-de-Coly, Font-de-Gaume, Cadouin, Lalinde, Beynac, La Roque-Gageac, Domme, Castelnaud,Martel, Carennac, Rocamadour, St Cere etc. |
I'd vote for Sarlat because it has a lot to offer after/before your daytrips. It has a very picturesque medieval oldtown with comfortable restaurants. It's not as overun by tourists & souvenir shops like Rocamadour. Unfortunately I've never been to Les Eyzies, Leon-Vezeres or Montignac, but I personally would prefer a bigger town for a base.

Thanks, DAX. The original thread has now turned up under the heading "Base for the Dordogne". Don't know why I couldn't find it before. Looks like Sarlat is fine, and there may be other good places too.

Oops,I may have to stand corrected after reading other posts, however I had no traffic problem whatsoever in April. Beynac & Domme are nice but perhaps too small for a base. Dunno about the other villages.

Sarlat, no question but be sure to do all the others you mention as that is an excellent list. Larry J |
