I find Terminal 2E frustrating in related ways. After you go through security, there is a lot of opportunity to buy very expensive merchandise in upscale mall-type stores that never have any customers in them, but there are very few places to get the kinds of things travelers really can use. This includes refreshments both to eat in the terminal and to bring on the plane, book stores, drug stores, and the type of general conveniences that used to be common in airports before they tried to become shopping malls.
Don't elevate the sins of CDG into some sort of universal airport sin. LHR T5 is as much a shopping mall as any airport, but the essentials are very well-covered. T2E is simply a different creature.
A shame, really, as I think the main terminal is beautiful. Even the satellite, for all of it's blandness, isn't terrible, though the dark security area and the cramped shopping area it dumps you into aren't the most pleasant. There is a lot of potential there, if they only would think about how people use the airport. Once S3 opens, and they improve the linkage between 2E and 2F (and ditch 2D), then the physical space could make a great hub. We'll see whether they can make it work.
