Don Alfonso (restaurant) -- Sorrento
 

I'd like to try to eat here, but since I don't have a car and will be relying exclusively on public transportation, it seems difficult to fit this in with just a day on the Amalfi Coast. That's the conclusion I've come to after looking at bus schedules. And unfortunately a full day is all I have for the Coast.

Are there cabs that will take me from the restaurant to the Sorrento station for a train to Naples after dinner? How much would that be? Or perhaps even to Naples directly? It'd be awful to be stuck in Sorrento after a presumably lovely dinner. (I've decided to stay in Naples and have booked the hotel.)

When you get to Sorrento, bargain with some of the cab drivers in the line at the Tasso Square, they can give you a good, set price, and most if not all of them speak English.

I would be remiss if I didn't tell you that you are missing out by not staying over in Sorrento. It is delightful. (And I also recommend trying the restaurant L'Antica Trattoria.)

Otherwise, you can definitely take a cab from the restaurant to the train station. There are also several posts on here that provide names and numbers for private drivers and/or limos.

Any idea as to what the cab fare will be like (i.e. what's considered fair and reasonable)? Thanks. (The restaurant is on the Sorrentine Peninusla on Sant Agata.)

Hi Lizzie, it was tough deciding between Naples and Sorrento. Really we'll only have two and a half days in the area (day 1 we fly in from Athens and day 3 we leave for Rome to take a flight the following day but we're not planning to do any sightseeing in Rome).

I thought about using Sorrento as a base, but using Naples seems safer because it's more of a transportation hub than Sorrento. (So for example, if my flight from Athens is canceled, at least I don't have to worry about catching a bus to Sorrento, etc.) Maybe we'll try to make up for it by looking into the gelateria (sp?) in Naples. (Time Out lists two. :-))

111op: I still have to strongly suggest Sorrento (trains or hydrofoils to Naples are fairly easy, with a train back to Rome.) We just didn't care for Naples that much. Enjoy your gelato.

Actually, in a way, you've a point -- Sorrento is about equidistant from Pompeii compared to Naples, and Sorrento is actually closer to Capri by hydrofoil than Naples. But, well, I'm leaving tomorrow, so too late to change anything now. :-)

How about some suggestions for a lunch in this area? We will be going to Pompeii and then will drive to Sorrento around lunch time before returning to Naples (ship) around 5 PM. We have eaten at Tio Sam's but it is closed on Tuesday and would like to try somewhere different anyway. We would love to have a rather light lunch, but hopefully at a charming place with a view. Any ideas? There will be four of us and we can make reservations if necessary. (No more than 25 Euros each if that is possible in this expensive area)

We were in Sorrento this July, and really enjoyed lunch at LANTERNA in the old town. There's no view, but the food was really delicious, and you could easily eat well there for $25/per person or less.
