Dolomites - Where to stay!
We'll be visiting the Dolomites in May and I'm really excited. Unfortunately, I didn't know when we bought our tickets that a lot of things are still closed in May and that the weather may be iffy.....
That being said, where is a good place to stay while there? We love to hike (short ones, since we won't have a lot of time), and love just driving through amazing scenery. We also love quaint villages where we can walk for a bite to eat or a glass of wine. Any advise is greatly appreciated! For those who have been there, what IS the weather like in mid-late May? Thanks!! |
May in the Dolomites is between seasons and is often muddy for hiking. That would not deter me from enjoying the fabulous scenery but may limit your hiking options.
I would stay in Val Gardena---maybe Ortisei. I would enter your dates into Booking.com to find availability. Some hotels are always open---the local tourist bureau plans it that way. |
We recently spent 5 days in Bolzano and loved it. It was a great town with lots to see and do, and was also a great base for day trips.

Though you may prefer smaller towns I loved Cortina d'Ampezzo and its area - the town itself ain't huge but has everything a town should have plus left overs from a long ago Winter Olympics.
|
For May I would check Meran, Kalterersee, Toblach, Bolzano/Bozen (transport hub), or - south of the Dolomites area - Riva del Garda.
