Dolomites hiking?
Hi all,
We're hiking in Austria for a week in late Agust and then we plan to visit Italy for 2 nights, driving from Innsbruck. To see the the Dolomites for the first time. Ideally we'd like to stay the 2 nights in different huts/refugios. Please suggest a suitable itinerary and huts? moderate to hard hiking few hours a day and a cicruilar route would be ideal. We'll be returning to Innsbruck. Thanks :) |
So, you will com from Innsbruck. But what will be the final destination resp the destination after having left the Dolomites?
|
We're flying to and from Vienna, taking train to and from Innsbruck.
So we visit Dolomites, return the car at Innsbruck, train to Vienna, fly home. Thanks, I was hoping you'd reply, I noticed your posts about the region :) |

The most popular area in the Dolomites is 3 Zinnen/3Cime del Lavaredo. In 2 days only you can't do much more.
But you don't need a car for hat. Take a train from Innsbruck to Franzensfeste/Fortezza and a connecting one from there to Toblach/Dobbiaco and you are in he heart of everything. Attachment 8967 From Toblach/Dobbiaco you can easily reach Vienn with only 1 train change thanks to the Interciity (with dining car and family car) Lienz dp 15.53 - Vienna ar 21.36, via the scenic itinerary via Lake Millstatt, Lake Woerthersee - Klagenfurt - Semmering Pass. Connecting train from Toblach/Dobbiaco dp 14.06 |
Thanks for the detailed suggestions, you even included the bus schedule!
We're travelling 2 weeks total and going to have some luggage, I really don't want to lug it to Italy. I plan to leave it in Innsbruck, either at a hotel or at the train station. Also, the train Lienz-Vienna is almost 6 hours! I can't even find the Toblach-Lienz train, combined that would be more trains than I am willing to take in one day. Lastly, I like having a car to make my own decisions when and where to go. So, the plan stands, we'll rent a car in Innsbruck and drive to Dolomites. I'd like to avoid the most crowded locations and I am afraid Tre Cime is going to be crowded. How about hiking around Selva in Puez Odle NP? What about parking and overnight parking, is it a problem? thanks :) |
August is top high season all over Italy. I don't think that it makes a big difference whether you go to Toblach/Misurina or to Wolkenstein in Groeden/Sėlva Val Gherdejna.
