Dolomites

We are thinking of adding 3 nights in the dolomites to our trip. Does anyone recommend a town or area that might be the best to stay in? We are hoping yo do some hiking and/or biking. Thanks!

We like the Val Gardena[ Google that name].
The most convenient location is the village of Ortisei. Heer are shots from our trip last year---we loved the Grones Hotel.

We really liked the Val Gardena. The towns of Selva, Santa Christina and Ortesei have no shortage of good places to stay, and access to some of the best hiking trails on earth.

When will you be going?

Good god. You can tell we are related, huh?

Every time I see a post by Bobthenav or Mr. Go on the Dolomites I know I'm going to be really unhappy that my hiking trip is still 13 months away and I can't go RIGHT NOW. How am I going to make it through the next year until I can step onto an Italian hiking trail and have a fabulous trip like they've had? And all those fabulous photos -- I'm just overwhelmed. Sigh.

As Tom Petty says, the wai-ai-ting is the hardest part!

We were in the Dolomites last Sept. and stayed in Ortisei - in a lovely place overlooking the town and mountains.

"Hotel Digon" - family run. We got the 1/2 board (breakfast and dinner). It was a great bargain and our room was new and large and had a small balcony overlooking the mountains.

Enjoy. The Dolomites are wonderful.

Wow those photos are amazing, thank you for sharing. We will be there sept 6-10. Any ideas about weather then?

I've been in or near the Dolomites twice in the second week in September. One week had brilliant weather, the other was nearly entire rain and/or fog. Your best bet would be to go to a site like weather underground, put in your dates and a large town, e.g. Cortina for an historical record.

Fortunately, despite my ignorance, the staff at the hotel in Ortisei would not let me go hiking unless I was properly prepared for wet weather. Apparently they had problems with in the past with guests suffering from severe hypothermia.

Days 2, 3, 5 & 7 are best. Probably.
