At any ATM which seem to be found on every street corner in London...some street corners have 4 one at each corner.

I'm not joking - Marks and Spencers - both Oxford St branches. They don't charge commission and you get the daily exchange rate.

Check with your bank and credit card company; but most ATMs are the cheapest way to get local european currency. Some might have a transaction fee; like American ATM's, the fee can vary but most are not terribly expensive.
The spread on buy-sell for most currencies at exchange agencies is 10% or more, so figure they charge about 5% or more commission. Use ATM's.

Debby - The other posts are correct but might be a little confusing - DO NOT change dollars to pounds. Leave your dollars home in your checking account and get pounds as you need them from ATMs (called cashpoints in the UK). This gives you a MUCH better rate than exchanging dollrs or travelers cheques.

British banks do not charge a fee to use ATMs. Your own bank probably will charge you a fee but it is usually only $1 - $2 and will be much less than the transaction fee charged to exchange dollars for pounds.
