Dollars to Euros in Italy

Does anyone know what the fees are at a bank in Italy to change dollars into Euros? Is it the same as everyone seems to charge here.

If you used the rate of 1.50 you would get 666 Euros for $1000. But today in the USA you only get 625 at best which is a rate of 1.6

Do Italian banks charge the same fees or more/less?

We have decided to use ATMs as before but we usually like to get a small amount of Euros to take with us before we leave. But with these kind of percentages tacked on it doesn't make sense to do it.

Use your ATM at the airport to get you first clutch of euros

and the airport will also certainly have an exchange office if you don't want to do the ATM - and it will probably pay a better rate than you can get at home

And the exchange office is a sure thing - it will be open - always when international flights land IME

A in-town bank probably pays a bit better than the airport exchange but changing money at an Italian bank can be a hassle IME

Thanks.

We are coming into Venice via train from Budapest.

We will be in Vienna first and will get Euros to tide us over until we find a good ATM in Venice.

AFter reading about ATMs in Italy I hope they all work. Never had a problem before so guess we shouldn't have one this trip either.

We were working on rates etc and just thought I would ask. I like to have money with me when I leave home - security blanket I guess. Will I have some Euros from the last trip so I won't be without.

Thanks again for the info.

...btw just to be my usual obnoxeous self (or to make idle chatter)...

officially the plural of euro is....euro. So the title of the article should be dollars to euro in Italy!

I always wonder why I don't have good suggestions for the money exchange questions and then I realize I always have enough "traveling money" in Euro or Pounds at hand.

It's sort of a Karma thing...If I have it already, I know I'm going to return. I'm such a dork.

I think the one time I didn't have sufficient cash on hand at arrival there were plenty of ATMS at hand. So, I would say to avoid the fees, just trust in the cash machine upon your arrival.

xyz123,

"...btw just to be my usual obnoxious self (or to make idle chatter)..."

Obnoxious is spelled o-b-n-o-x-i-o-u-s.

Thanks everyone. And for the reminder that more than one Euro is Euro.

Hey BB,

>We have decided to use ATMs as before but we usually like to get a small amount of Euros to take with us before we leave. But with these kind of percentages tacked on it doesn't make sense to do it.<

So, for a $100 exchange, you will get 63E instead of 67.

Is that going to break the bank?

If you are worried about "good" atms; go to your credit card site and you can get exact locations of ATMS everywhere, even on easy to read maps.

On two trips to Venice I have had to try several different ATMs to find one that worked for me on a given day, just keep trying a different bank until you find one that works. One that worked for me one day wouldn't accept my card three days later, so don't panic just go to another bank.

Thanks, Ira.

No, the $4 won't break my bank but I don't like giving my money away.

But think it would only make a difference of $70 on 1000 Euro (no s) May be worth thinking about it again.

Will watch and wait to see how the dollar goes - up or down. If is it heading up again, then it would be best to dive in and get those Euro (no s).

Funniest darn thing -- B&B and longboatkey show up in most of the threads I've been reading, and if B&B is from Wisconsin and longboatkey is near AMI -- well, there's my connection!
On the subject of ATMs and Euro, I just asked my credit union to up my daily cash limit for my ATM card -- the small hotels I stay at like to be paid in cash, and I was concerned about getting enough cash per withdrawal. They're also putting me on a "travel" list for my travel dates in October, so their fraud department doesn't freak out and freeze my card. And that's a good thing!

Hi B,

>But think it would only make a difference of $70 on 1000 Euro (no s) May be worth thinking about it again.<

Stop thinking about changing more than $100 into Euro in the US. You only need enough to get you to your hotel the first day.

>Will watch and wait to see how the dollar goes - up or down.<

Stop trying to be an arbitrageur. You don't have enough money to get into the game.

Don't sweat the small stuff, and enjoy your visit.
