Doing laundry in Iceland?

We will be in Iceland for 16 days, July 17-Aug 2. I don't like carrying lots of luggage (and WOW airlines charges per checked bag!) so we usually only bring about 6 days worth of clothing and do laundry twice while on a two-week trip. However, I've discovered that laundry facilities are few and far between in the wilds of the Ring Road.

Does anyone have any experience with this? I've emailed the guesthouses/B&Bs we're staying at to ask about facilities, but I've not heard back yet. Am I being paranoid, or will this be an issue? At the very least, I can wash undies in the sink if I have to - I've done it before!

All else fails throw them into one of the thermal pools you see everywhere on the Ring!

Woolite or an equivalent? That's how mom did it back in the days before laundry-in-your-flat rentals . . .

I was able to contact the B&Bs/guesthouses at my 1/3 and 2/3 points. They don't have laundry facilities, but there are some nearby in Hofn and Holmavik :)

My experience living in Iceland was that most Icelanders will wear clothes several times before washing. With 6 sets of clothes for 16 days, you'll be fine as long as what you bring can handle it. For example, jeans and outer layers will be fine. Hang clothes up at the end of the day - maybe a travel sized bottle of frebreeze if that makes you feel fresher. Use woolite in the sink for undergarments and socks. Fleece and other performance-type materials can wash in the sink too and typically dry quickly.

I have no idea of the answer to the question, but I think the question is one of the best I've ever seen on Fodors.

I might consider bringing some extra underwear (lighter to pack), and cutting down doing laundry to once/trip this time. Sounds like you could be spending more time than you would like seeking out laundry facilities.

Good point, socaltraveler. Undies and bras (and much-needed socks!) are light and small.

Sheila - better than 'are the vikings bad in September?' :)
