Does this use Landsberg am Lech as base - does this make sense?
 

We will be spending just four days and nights in the area and will be leaving from Munich airport for home.

We will be coming from two days in Rothenburg. Does it make sense to use Landsberg am Lech as base for visiting Munich, Oberammergau, Neuschwanstein, etc. Mapquest shows it is less than 50 miles from Landsberg to Munich.

We really like to stay in same area and do a little driving instead of packing and unpacking. And would prefer staying in a smaller town.

Just would like some feedback on this town or possibly another to use as base for visiting area. Also would really like some advice on specific hotel or pension to stay in. We are on a budget and just want someplace clean and hopefully not a cookie cutter type place to stay.

I am not familiar with Lansberg, but I would suggest that if you stay there that you might consider using the train into Munich to save yourself some driving and parking hassles. I checked and there are about 2 trains per hour from Landsberg rtd. Munich, each connected through Kaufering near Lansberg. The train ride takes about 50 minutes including connection. Connections sound offputting but actually work pretty well in Germany.

If you will mostly be visiting the sights to the south, you might better stay south and visit Munich by train. Garmisch is about 1.3 hours by train (no connections) every hour and there are many places between to stay.

A party up to five can use a Bayern-Ticket in this area for about 25 euros to travel all day in Bavarian making train both handy and inexpensive.

Mindelheim would be nice as a base too. Landsberg is the place where Hitler was imprisoned 1923 for high treason and unfortunately released again not even two years later.

i stayed there years agjo and thought it a nice little town. Can't remember the hotel - it would have been a very small one. Went swimming in the Lech - very cold! Be sure to also visit the nearby Wies Kirche

If you have a car, visiting Neuschwanstein (en route stop at the Wieskirche)is OK, as is Oberammergau. There are no trains from Landsberg to Fuessen (Neuschwanstein).

I agree with the other writer, take the train into Munich. The Bayernkarte is a good deal, and 5 of you can travel on the same ticket, for under $30 a day. Limitations: Can't commence trip before 9AM, on weekdays only, and no fast trains (IC, ICE). But on that short run, it real;ly doen's matter.

Landsberg is a nice oldtown, untouchesd by WWII.

Haven't stayed there for many years, but driven through just last year. The Michelin guide shows Lansberger Hof as in the "simple comfort" category, which should correspond well with you requirements. FAX (from US) 049-8191-3202100. The Fax# for the local tourist office is 049-8191-128160. They usually have some English speaking person on on their staff and will make reservations if you tell them what you want.

Landsberg am Lecht is an old cobble-streeted town, quite pleasant. However as a base for the places you mention, you might find Herrsching even better. On the (outermost) commuter train line from Munich, it is also an easy base for Fussen, Neuschwanstein, Oberammagau etc. And it is a lakeside town - very pleasant indeed.
