Does this seem like a reasonable itinerary?
I am going to Ireland for 12 days/12 nights with my fiance this summer. We were planning on renting a car, following the southern coast of Ireland, and hitting a few cities/towns. This is just the bare bones, but do these seems like reasonable locations and lengths of time for our B&B/hotel stays?
July 12th & 13th - Cork for 2 nights July 14th - Killarney for 1 night July 15th & 16th - Dingle for 2 nights July 17th & 18th - West Coast of Clare (Any suggestions as to a town?) for 2 nights July 19th - Limerick for 1 night July 20th & 21st - Galway for 2 nights July 22nd & 23rd - Dublin for 2 nights |
Sorry, that's wrong. Updated dates below...
July 12th & 13th - Galway for 2 nights July 14th & 15th - Coast of Clare July 16th - Limerick for 1 night July 17th & 18th - Dingle for 2 nights July 19th - Killarney for 1 night July 20th & 21st - Cork for 2 nights July 22nd & 23rd - Dublin for 2 nights |
Skip Limerick and Killarney and spend the time in the Southwest out on the Beara, Sheepshead and Mizen. Great small villages, beautiful seaviews. Leaving Galway spend one night in either Lisdoonvarna or Doolin and see the cliffs and the Burren. The ride down the coast from Galway to Doolin is very scenic. I am not a fan of Doolin but others love it. The night you free up here spend in Kinsale. Short ride up the road to Cork for one night and use that second night for Kilkenney with a stop and the Rock of Cashel enroute. Have fun

I agree with skipping LImerick - it's a fairly industrial and uncharming city. Killarney is quite touristy, but if you want to check out the site at Killarney National Park, it's a great location, although Kenmare would be more interesting, IMHO.
Any particular reason for ending up in Dublin? It would be much easier to stay on the west/south coasts and fly in/out of Shannon. |
SKIP LIMERICK~~~~ awful town - lol - Killarney is ok -- but I'd add the time to dingle - really pretty town -- unless you want to just see stuff and 'run' -- dublin's a good party town - lots to see -
You may want three days in galway - lots to do (a bit north and a bit south of there) |
Not sure if you have already done this -- but spending the hours reading the books "Rick Steve's Ireland 2009" and "Fodor's Ireland 2009" will give you such great ideas as to good itineraries for what you like to do. Some people love to spend hours in church ruins, museums, etc. Others love to shop, and need hours exploring each town. Myself? I love the outdoors -- skip cities and give me a 3-mile hike or a place where I can have a picnic and I am happy. Good luck!

So, do you think we should do one or two nights in Doolin? Also should we plan an overnight between Doolin and Dingle, or is that a decent drive?

Does this look any better?
