Does size matter?

I am trying to decide the size luggage I need to take as a carry-on for a 2-week trip? Do I need a 21" or 22"? Does 1" really make that much difference?

It may to the airline! You'll want to check specific carry-on requirements for the carrier(s) you will be flying.

I have read reports on this forum that 1" can make a difference. What I have discovered is that what luggage makers say the dimensions of their bags is differs from the reality that airport size checkers reveals.

I got a 20" bag before traveling this past summer just to be safe. Be sure to measure from the bottom of the wheels to the top of the handle.

it can matter a LOT. If the 22" bag has a handle and wheels sticking out and not included in the dimensions, it can be over 23 " and not fit in the sizer boxes. A 20 or 21 inch bag is safer. You don't want to find out at the airport that it doesn't fit.

Has anyone actually had his/her bag measured and turned down at the gate? My 22" bag with small wheels has never been turned down. Maybe I've been lucky. ((*))

it entirely depends on the airline. Some are very strict about bags fitting in the sizer, others just give a quick look-see, and still others just take your word for it.

Yes - I've had my bags measured many times - but being "21 inches" (actually close to 22" ) never a problem.

I only use the 21" bag once in a while though - I mostly use a 19".

Yes, my 22" was turned down at check-in, but for weight not for size (in the olden days with British Air).

we always travel with carry- ons only and have never had the luggage measured ,
but we always use mayor international airlines. Local, charter or discount airlines may be more strict.

Hi B,

Many airlines have a gizmo that you put your carryon into. If it doesn't fit it has to be checked.

They don't always check, though.

Best bet is to check with the airline.

> Does size matter?

There are some folks (usually women) who say "yes", and others (usually men) who say "no".

Size definitely matters on Ryanair flights (cheap europe flights). Supposidly they have STRICT check in allowances that have to be 55x40x20cm in dimensions and 10 kgs.

The women I have asked about this (none of them a squeeze of mine) have said "up to a point."

We are flying Delta / Air France so I will check their rules. We are wanting to carry-on to save time and don't want to have to check because of a technicality.
