Does BP really mean "Beyond Petroleum"?
 

I have traveled and worked in Britain. The BP petro stations from what I remember stands for British Petroleum. The BP ads on American TV makes it sound like it stands for "Beyond Petroleum" and say nothing about British Petroleum Company. Am I crazy, or does anyone else think this is misleading?

I think it is just their little play on words - meaning BP does more than just selling petroleum. I don't believe it is meant to mislead anyone.

I think it's because British Petroleum sold their US service stations and its brand to Exxon (now Exxon-Mobil) many years ago. So it's no longer British Petroleum.

Amaco gas stations in my area are now BP. I think the BP ads are misleading. If they say BP Beyond Petroleum they shoud say BP British Petroleum instead, and quit misleading those who have not traveled in Britain.

They are British Petroleum but are doing an add campaign to burnish their image. They are investing in non-petroleum energy sources (solar, I believe) and want people to think of them as (future?) clean source of energy.

"Misleading" How exactly is a marketing slogan misleading? Did you expect to go to their gas station and get a gourmet meal or dental services. Do you REALLY believe that GE will bring "good things" to your life?

The company was orginally British Petroleum. It is now known simply as BP. Some stations are BP Amoco. What's the confusion.

Clearly you've got a very good life. I mean, if this is your big concern, consider yourself blessed.

I'm from Ohio originally and still drive there to visit family often and it seems to me there are still BP gas stations there (green and yellow logo, around Columbus). I always stop at one just off route 71 going onto rte 23.

One thing I thought was kind of funny was when I was in Paris last time, there was a younger American college-age female who didn't understand the difference in BP the petroleum company and the Banque de Paris (which I think has acronym of BNP). She was making a transaction at that bank in front of me and told the clerk that in the US, they just call it BP and it sells gas. The bank clerk looked very skeptical.
