Does anyone send postcards anymore?

We will be in Paris for the first part of our trip, and I think it makes the most sense to send out postcards then.

I haven't really seen threads relating to sending postcards back home anymore.

I know there is a post office in the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre - does the post office in the Eiffel Tower still have a special stamp if we mail from there?

Also, how much would it cost to send postcards home? I wanted to get and estimate on how much the stamps would be.

Yes, the Tour Eiffel has a special stamp. Our grandkids, nieces and nephews, everyone else, love receiving them!

If you plan to send postcards, it's most efficient to print mailing labels before leaving home.

I don't remember the cost (airmail costs significantly more, but the cards may get there before you arrive home, if you care), but it's not a major expense.

We use to send a ton of cards...fast forward to 2007...we now send an email with a photo attatched, get's there the same day, unlike before when we use to sometimes beat the cards home!

We send postcards that often are our annual or semi-annual contact with friends and acquaintances. It tuns out to be a relatively expensive endeavor. Between postcard prices and mailing, I would guess that each mailing will cost about $2.

I can't give you specific prices or instructions, but YES I always send postcards! I think it's big fun. Sometimes the kiosks where you buy the cards sell stamps (at a bit inflated price). I buy them, or don't mind investigating the local post office. It just works in to part of my 'errands' while traveling.

We went to Spain March 2007 and I sent a few postcards. I always take preprinted labels and send the cards from the first city. Postcards were about 50 cents (American) and stamps from Spain were about $1 (US). I did the same thing from Italy last year (same cost). Mine took about a week from Spain to varies eastern US cities.

I send a lot fewer than I used to. Now mostly to elderly friends/relatives and little kids who enjoy getting "exotic" mail from around the world. For "news" I e-mail, but many people still enjoy receiving postcards.

When I travel solo, I always send a postcard <b>each day</b> to my husband at home. 99% of the time, I'd be back home from the trip before the postcards arrive.

It's fun to receive the postcard and read what I wrote. It also lets me re-live the vacation.

We do still send a few conventional postcards, but nowhere near as many.

On our trip to Romania, we uploaded some photos to a card making web site and entered our message and the site sent out real postcards with our travel photo on it (us in a potato field outside my grandfather's village with the farmers and bags of potatoes they had dug.) The postcards were mailed from the US, so reached everybody before we returned home. That was pretty cool.

We used one of our Romania travel photos for our Christmas card this year (angel statues from the Cathedral in Cluj) and got a ton of compliments on it.

It is $2 it send one postcard, or am I getting that wrong?

Can I get a sheet of stamps for postcards like you an in the US from a Post office?

Does anyone remember how much it would be to send a postcard from the Eiffel Tower?

Would it be cheaper to send them all in an express envelope? I remember on our last trip, we went to the Post Office and they said that method would be cheaper than sending them one at a time.

No, it doesn't cost $2 to send a postcard. Postage should be around &euro;1. Postcard cost is extra, of course.

I usually go to the post office on my first day of my trip and buy all the stamps that I'll need. Since I'm only mailing postcards to my husband (one per day), it's easy for me to figure out how many I need.

Not sure what you meant by sending in an express envelope... You're sending all the postcards to one person only?

I personally like to see the tattered postcards arriving, with the cancelled stamps etc.

BTW, when I was very young, my dad sent me postcards from his trips. Maybe that's how I picked up the habit - only for my husband though.

So minus the cost of the actual postcard, it's about 1 euro to send one postcard? Yikes - did not realize it was that much.

I am only going to send postcard to all my family/friends that really appreciate that kind of thing.

I sent some postcards from Paris to the US. I believe stamps were 90 or 92 euro cents (not sure how to say that) and they didn't take long to get here- 3-5 days or so. I didn't know the zip code for one of my friends, and the lady in the post office said it was ok, don't put anything, and that postcard still took less than a week to get here. Also, as someone mentioned, I liked going to the post office, waiting in line, looking around, etc., to buy my stamps, feeling kind of like a local.

I would say it's definitely worth it to send postcards- there's something special about it that email (in my opinion) can't match.

Express envelopes are cheaper than putting the stamp right on the postcard. The last time I was in Dinard in January the lady at the post office thought I was daft because I refused the cheaper option because I like the way the stamps look on the postcards themselves.

Since I live in Europe I buy all my postcards BEFORE my trip....at the Salvation Army store. I find them for about a penny (centime) each, unused, some are on the older side, like 60's or 70's, but they are fun because they are different than the ones you can buy now. And cheap.

Actually I love receiving postcards and since people I am close to know that, I get my fair share. Consequently, on trips, I also mail out to all those I get them from. Something quaint about it (not to talk about I have NEVER been able to replicate the picture in a postcard!). Why be in such a hurry to get a picture right on the same day?! Slow down and enjoy life a bit. Mailing postcards from a small town abroad has the same feel as buying stuff in a farmer's market with the locals (which I do too if I have time).

My husband sends postcards to the whole familiy even if we just go away for a weekend. At least all I have to do is sign them. He likes keeping in touch in the old fashioned written form.

We were in Paris the first two weeks of April and found a place where postcards were 10 for 1 euro! They cost 85 cents to mail to the USA. I didn't know about the special stamp from Eiffel or would have made an effort to use that. Be prepared to wait in line to get stamps (I don't have enough French to use the machines).

Post card stamps are .85 euros now. You can buy them at almost any cafe that is also a &quot;tabac.&quot; Make sure you indicate the country they are going to be used for since a post card to the US will require different postage than one to Europe.

I have a folder which has addresses of people, many of whom I have never met in person but to whom I send postcards from various places in the world. Some I've &quot;met&quot; via the Hemingway listserve and are as far away as a Kibutz in Israel or Switzerland, and some are friends from TA. I generally send tham all a postcard and they appreciate getting one out of the blue since I don't always tell them I am going somewhere.

In Paris, postcards can be as inexpensive as 10 / 1 euro or 1 euro each for the prettier ones. Check the Bukanistas. I simply collect them as I walk around, then address them at a cafe while sipping a drink. I have to keep track of who has gotten one.

A nice secret is if you are travleing with a SO sneakily write and post a postcard to them while you are on vacation so that they get it once you get home.

Not only do I send postcards to family I send one to myself from each place I have been to. I use them then in scrapbooking of my trips and to jog my memory of some of my favorites sights of the trip.

I love receiving postcards and sending them that now I got my husband in the habit that when he goes away to business to a place I haven't been to he gets me one. I also ask people to pick me up some if they happen to go to places I know that I won't be able to get to. I have a fairly good collection now.

Have fun on your trip.
