does anyone know where Jim Morrison of the doors is buried?
 

I will be in France for about 10 day and understand that Jim Morrison of the band the Doors was buried there and that you could at least in the past visit his grave site. I know it sounds a little morbid but I think it would be very fasinating as I am a big fan just to say I saw it. Thanks in advance for any help

In Pere-Lachaise Cemetery, Metro stops Pere Lachaise or Philippe Auguste.

FYI - people have vandalized his grave and the tombstone (a bust of his head) is gone. Not much to see and pretty sad.

We were just there in Sept., his gravesite is nothing to see, just a headstone, guarded by a very bored security guard. There weren't very many other people at the cemetary, perhaps more come in the summer months. <BR> <BR>If you still decide to go, one of the entrances had a kiosk with a free map, be sure to get one as the cemetary is huge and you could wander around for hours if you don't have a map.

HI, <BR> <BR>many years ago, I made some gravestone rubbings of his headstone & gave them to various friends who were into the Doors. kinda neat - if you are inclined, check it out! just make sure your paper is at least 2-3 feet wide and I think 4-5 feet long? <BR> <BR>I forget how big it was now, but you definitely want enough room to get it all, AND frame it afterwards. actually what I did was get a big roll of paper, about 2.5 feet or so wide and quite long, and cut it into the right length when I got there. <BR> <BR>make sure you take a paper tube, and the wax or charcoal & TAPE. if you really have time you can try to find the supplies when you get there, but I think it would be less hassle to have them with you. it's all light, after all, & you can chuck the wax when you are done. (or save it, and make others...)

It's been 5yrs but I remember the flower shop just before the entrance from the Pere Lachaise Metro stop also sells a guidebook/map for the cemetery. I had mainly gone there to visit Bizet's grave and others, Morrison's was just a side visit:). I guess because I look like a middle-aged Hippie all the young people were coming up to me and asking (English, French. German etc) where Jim Morrison's grave was:). His music to me is still great but sadly it is hard to find something nice to say about the man when he was alive. HTH Regards, Walter <BR>

I've been there three times (I take high school kids on tours to Europe!). I would agree with the previous poster that the cemetery would be worth a visit with or without Jim Morrison's grave. His grave was my first stop, but as others have described, there is really not much left to see. The rest of the cemetery is actually very pleasant to walk around, and there are many other famous graves to seek out. My favorite was Oscar Wilde's grave, where the unusual headstone was covered with lipstick. You can pick up a free map at the main entrance just off of Boulevard de Menilmontant.

Just look for the graffti! It was criminal what "people" have done, not only to Jim Morrison's grave site, but to other loved ones' grave sites! Horrid example of human beings! Animals have more respect! <BR> <BR>There is a beautiful sculpture in honor of the French resistance in World War II. <BR> <BR>Sorry if I sounded off, but this is after all a cemetery. Let them rest in peace!

I agree with XXX above..it is disgusting what the "fans" have done to the surrounding headstones and vaults. The graffiti is everywhere, and the grave is often surrouned by spaced out hippie wanta-bes, smoking and flipping their cigarette butts all over the place. The last time I was there (against my better wishes but my son wanted to see it) I was saddened to see an elderly gentleman cleaning up the debris and scrubbing the headstone of his wife's grave next door to Morrison's. I felt so sorry for him and realized how irritating it must be to have the final resting site of your loved one next to this squalid bunch of low lifes that have no respect. This poor old man probably spends hours every week keeping his wife's grave neat just to have it trashed by these misfits. The best thing that could happen is to dig the deceased dope head up and deposit his bones in the nearest sewer and get them out of the cemetery.

Dear No Fan - Please leave the poor guy alone! Jim Morrison had a great voice and made a lot of people happy. Don't criticize people you never knew. It isn't his fault that a few people are trashing the cemetary. Maybe someone will say bad things about you when you are dead.

Attn: Big Fan <BR> <BR>Either you've never been to Pere Lachaise cemetery to witness the desecrations of the nearby headstones/ gravesites of loved ones, or you have no idea of what "few" means! This is a sacred burial ground, not a Disneyworld feature! <BR> <BR>Just imagine graffati, foul language, etc, written on headstones of your loved ones -- it's criminal! If you want to visit the cemetery, please be respectful! Don't go there for a destruction party! I was sickened by what I saw!

Agree with the sentiment that this is a must see even without Jimmy's bizarre presence. Other gravesites include Chopin, Montand and Signoret, Wilde, various Napoleonic marshalls, including Ney and Massena, Edith Piaf, Isadora Duncan, Sarah Bernhardt, Balzac to name a few. <BR>First went to this place about '85 and return whenever I am in Paris. I also feel sorry for any neighbor of JM's, but believe me, before they put a security guard in the area, the vandalism was ten times worse, just an absolute DISGRACE.

Yes, I have been to is grave last summer and was in awe of the beautiful cemetary. When I went it was a nice day and people were standing by his grave quietly taking photos. I saw some throw flowers on his grave but that was all. My family and I were very disapointed and shocked that someone had stolen the bust of him and later saw that people do trash the area. Of course I agree that that is a terrible thing to do! I had a feeling that someone would respond when I said "a few" after I posted the reply but It was too late. I should have worded it better. What I meant by "a few" is that compared to the thousands that go every day, it is the minority. I think that the majority of people are respectful, don't you agree, or am I being too optimistic? If it is the majority that are trashing his grave and the cemetary, then I don't have much hope for the human race.

I've been to the cemetery and it's very beautiful. It's a shame about the graffiti but I imagine it's no as bad as it used to be before the (bored-looking) guard was placed there. Definitely a nice trip with or without Jim. Just be mindful of the cemetery and others who are there for loved ones...

has anyone been out to the plot this year? Last year I was told that this year his plot would be dug up because it had only been paid for up until the year 2000.

I read in the newspaper on 10/12/00 that most folks in that cemetary only have 30 years leases????? Morrison's has been leased to perpetuity (SPELLING!)

I think I read that his next 30 year lease was paid, so he's not going anywhere any time soon.

Yes he is staying (sadly for the neighboring gravesites). Just this week his father paid the lease on the site and the director of the cemetery accounced that contrary to rumour, there were no plans to move his body out. So, Big Fan and Igor, you can continue to go visit your "hero" and trash the area around his grave and desecrate the surrounding graves. <BR> <BR>Perhaps you might consider helping the poor old man next door clean his wife's grave while you ponder how your beloved Morrison helped humanity.
