We stayed at the Hotel Canada about 5 or 6 blocks away from that general area. It was very nice, and is affiliated with Best Western. The room was lovely, the bathroom splendid, the laundry service quick and wonderful. Had a pkg fed-exed to me from the States with no problems, and when I thought I had lost my check card in the room and called frantically from the airport, they went in and looked everywhere I asked, staying on the phone with me while they were searching. I found it later in a luggage pocket
, but had no doubt that they were actually looking for it when I asked.

We took a peek at des Artistes while we were in Rome, as we'd seen it online and it was a few blocks away from our hotel. It is definitely a "no frills," very basic hotel. If you're okay with that, the rates are good.

Hello emmabro - although we did not stay in one of the hotels you mentioned, I can give you some information regarding the area, and especially the Hotel Milazzo.
When we visited Rome in March, we rented an apartment (Domus Termini from homelidays.com). It was really wonderful for us.
We found the Termini area an acceptable area to stay in. IMO it gets a really bad rap here for being seedy, less desirable, etc. Okay, it's not close to the big campos or the castle or the Vatican. But it is right at the station where you can hop on and off any number of buses or the subway, and there are many restaurants nearby. I was not harrassed or threatened in any manner. There were a lot of people mingling (mostly men) at night, but I wasn't bothered one time.
Anyway, there are many hotels in the area. Some area very small, only a few rooms. In the apartment we rented, the door next door to ours (same floor) was the Hotel Milazzo. It was on the 4th floor but there was a working elevator (small but working for each of our 8 days). Most of the folks coming and going were young-ish (I'd say early 20s). If you stay here, there is a big orange sign on the outside of the building which has the name Milazzo. Easy to find. Away from the traffic of the main street, about a 2 minute walk from the station.

www.hotelkennedy.net is a very nice 3* I've stayed at 4x.
It's a couple of blocks from Termini.
Don't use their website to check for rates, instead email them.
You're going in the off-season so *if* you're using any websites like www.venere.com to check for rates instead email the hotels directly. You might get lower rate. Regards, Walter
