Does anybody know anything about..?

the Bankside House in London? Is it any good, I am a soldier deployed in Afghanistan and I plan on taking my mid-tour leave in England, London and Manchester, and I am looking for relativly inexpensive places to stay that are also of decent quality.

What's the max amount you want to pay in case people know of alternatives?

Do you want to stay in any particular area of London?

welcome to Fodors :)

you should re-post w/ a better title. All of Europe is lumped so a cutsey title like this one really doesn't tell anyone what you are asking about. "Bankside House, London? would be 1,000% better.

When you re-post mention what your budget is "relatively inexpensive" means different things to different people.

Also for dirt cheap you should consider Priceline - it is VERY good for London . . . .

sheesh - that should have read "All of Europe is lumped together . . . ."

also meant to say - Bankside House, being a university housing - availability can be very limited . . .

I have a veteran friend who highly recommends the Union Jack House right by Waterloo station as having special rates for American military and vets.

UStoUKDrew - I can't help you at all with your question but I do want to thank you sincerely for your service to the country. Despite what you and your colleagues might hear, there are many, many of us that appreciate your devotion and sacrifice.

Well thank you for the support and input, and sorry for the question title. I would like to keep it under 80GBP, I'm also looking at the Melrose House in London. I'll have in total about 6K$ US, but I don't want to spend it all on Hotels(even though I don't actually have to pay for my ticket, the government does that). The last time I was there in 2005, I stayed at the Copthorne, near High Street Kennsington, and that was nice.

Does anybody know of any good places in Manchester? I was just looking at the Copthorne there, but that seems to be a bit pricey. For the entire time that I was planning on staying there it would cost me 1000 Quid, thats alot, thats a third of my budget on one hotel. So any help here would also be great.

UStoUKDrew Apr 26th, 2007 09:56 AM

thats 80GBP a night, not total. If I have to go over thats fine, I would like to keep it under 100GBP a night.

If you use Priceline you can get a really nice central London hotel for around $100 - not £100. Check out biddingfortravel.com.

As for Manchester - there are several fodorites who are from there or know it very well. If you re-post w/ a title that mentions Manchester there is a MUCH better chance they will see your question.

I wish you a wonderful time while you are on your leave UStoUK. I can't help with your questions as I have never been to England but I too wanted to thank you for the sacrifice you are making. Your service to your country is indeed appeciated. Stay out of harms way and have a wonderful time in England!

My son is staying at The Georgian House Hotel which is close to Victoria in June - his room with bathroom and cooked breakfast is 50GBP.
