Documentary on Venice playing in NYC this week
 

I just came across some information on a film showing at the Film Forum on W. Houston St., March 16-22. It is called "The Venetian Dilemma."

I haven't seen it, but it was recommended to me by my Italian instructor.

Thanks for the reminder. It was on my list of things to do and I somehow had forgotten it.

Interestingly, this is the first time I've encountered that I can't find a film listed in imdb.com .

I'm so glad I got to see this film, it was a chance to have to rarely told story of how constant waves of tourists in a beautiful city can overrun it and rob it of the quality of local life for residents, even while so many of them must depend on tourism for their livlihood.

It was interesting to find that in the last few decades, the local population is reduced by almost two thirds.

There was one brief scene that really brought tears to my eyes- when Michela Scibilia, the young Venetian woman featured in the film, is traveling in a gondola thru the canals at night, with her little son on her lap, showing him the stars, and the lights of the city as they passed by. It's very quiet, and your just hear the gentle sound of water lapping as the boat glides along, all the motorized water taxis are shut down for the day.

I recommend this film to anyone who loves Venice and wants to learn more about how her past is shaping her future....

bellastar -- I wish I could have seen it! It sounds like it is a very interesting film -- and I love seeing anything about Venice. My son has been sick since Friday morning, and I won't get a chance to see it before the 22nd...
