Do you usually take the tube...
 

Or do you walk to get from place to place in London?<BR><BR>Just curious. We usually take the tube, but have heard that we are missing so much by doing that. Maybe next time we will walk everywhere. <BR><BR>What do you do?

I prefer walking, but it does take up time and energy, so it also depends on how far I have ot go. A good compromise is to check the bus routes -- faster than walking (usually!) but you get to see a lot.

Whenever I'm in any big city with metro system, I prefer to start out by walking. Towards the end of day, when feet are getting weary it's time to use the underground. Consequently, one factor in my hotel selection is proximity to a metro stop --- once your dogs start barking, it's vital to be able to emerge from underground and stumble across street to hotel room.<BR>

In cities such as London, Paris, Rome etc. we generally do a bus for overall 'feel' for the city. Then we tube to an area and walk within an area.<BR><BR>A combination of transport is what works for us.<BR><BR>

We took the tube usually the two times we were there. My friend just got back from London, though, and she said a lot of the sites are within a few blocks of each other and so they walked to most places. I think she got to see a lot more than we did by doing that. <BR><BR>My sister and her husband went last year and they took the bus everywhere. She said that average trip took about 30 minutes because they were always stuck in traffic.

I usually take the tube because the bus takes too long to get from point A to point B (too many stops). The tube just seems faster. I also walk a great deal.

For me it works out about 50% tube, 30% walking and 10% each Buses and taxis.<BR><BR>Some places and some times make different modes better than others.

I usually take the Tube everywhere, because it goes everywhere you need to be. However, a great (and cheap) sightseeing trip is to get on one of the doubledecker buses and just ride around. If you get a London Visitor Card, it's good for the Underground and the buses, so you just flash your pass and go. The last time I was in London, our hotel room wasn't ready yet. We arrived early Sunday morning. My 8 year old nephew and I were wired and ready to go so we left my brother and his wife to crash in the hotel lobby and we hopped a doubledecker. Went down the Strand, stopped briefly at St. Pauls Cathedral (church was in session), hopped back on going the other way and just rode around for a couple hours. There's nothing like the view of London from the top deck of a doubledecker.

I take the tube almost everywhere in London. Once I'm at my destination if I have extra time I'll wander around the neighborhood.

We do a combo of tube and walking depending on how far we're going and the time of day. Typically, we avoid the tube at the busiest times and just hoof it. The buses give me motion sickness.
